Saint Peter of Verona Also known as Peter Martyr (1206 – April 6, 1252) Preacher and first Dominican martyr Evangelised Italy by preaching against the Cathar heresy that the physical world was evil The son of Cathars, his faith was nourished in Catholic school Cathar assassins split his skull with an axe Wrote "I believe in One God" with his blood as he lay dying "[Cathars] have plotted my death. . . Let them do what they will. I will accomplish more against them than I have done during my lifetime. "

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz 1600 – September 29, 1637 Layman and martyr The first Filipino saint Educated by the Dominicans and became a member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary Joined the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary. Married with 3 children Falsely accused of murder, he fled on a ship bound for Japan, where he was tortured and killed along with 3 Dominican friars. "I DID NOT COME TO JAPAN TO BE A MARTYR, NEVERTHELESS AS A CHRISTIAN AND FOR GOD I SHALL GIVE MY LIFE. "
St Ignatius Delgado (1761 -1883) Wanted to become a monk but was invited to become a Dominican and accepted "You do not understand Christ’s religion, if you do, you will convert. ” To his jailers As a friar, sent to Vietnam where he worked for nearly 50 years He became bishop at 33 and laboured for 43 year Arrested by Vietnamese authorities and put into a cage for public ridicule. Tortured for information he did not reveal, the 76 -year-old bishop died from exposure in the cage for 43 days before he could be beheaded

Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati OPL (1901 -1925) From a rich family, he secretly gave all he had to the sick and needy. Encouraged his schoolmates to live their Catholic faith and oppose Fascism. Enjoyed opera, fine art, mountain-climbing and playing pranks. Attended Mass daily from the age of 13. "As long as Faith gives me strength I will always be joyful; every Catholic cannot but be joyful"

St. Thomas Aquinas Doctor of the Church Philosopher and theologian in the scholastic tradition He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of the Thomistic school of philosophy and theology. Aquinas is held in the Catholic Church to be the model teacher for those studying for the priesthood (Code of Canon Law, Can. 252, § 3). (c. 1225 – 7 March 1274)
Yves Marie Joseph Cardinal Congar (April 8, 1904 - June 22, 1995) One of the most influential theologians of the 20 th century on the topic of the Catholic Church and ecumenism and influenced also the thinking of Pope John Paul II from the year 1946 onwards. Very active in the ecumenical movement and the first Catholic to contribute seriously to that scholarly discussion, Congar was once removed from teaching or publishing for a time, during the time of Pope Pius XII.
