Isaac Newton • He was an English mathematician, astronomer, theologian, author and physicist. • Newton formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation that formed the dominant scientific viewpoint until being superseded by theory of relativity. • Also build the first practical reflecting telescope and developed a sophisticated theory of color based on the observation that a prism separates light.
Newton’s First Law of Motion • States that every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force. • This is normally taken as the definition of Inertia.
Examples • Any outside force such as a push or pull • Any acceleration, in different directions.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion • States that the acceleration of an objects is dependent upon two variables: force acting upon the object and the mass of the object. • Acceleration is produced when net force acts on a mass.
Example • Kicking a ball
Newton’s Third Law of Motion • States that force acts in pairs. • For every action, there is a reaction force. • For every action there is an opposite reaction.
Example • Playing Pool • Car crash
Question/Out • Give me one example of newton’s laws?
