BRIAN INGPEN - MARITIME MAESTRO We could not have asked for a better way to start the second term than attending the Maritime Industry Awards and seeing our Maritime Economics teacher and mentor Brian Ingpen being honoured with the Maritime Maestro Award!

CHOIR PERFORMANCES The SA Maritime Awards evening was made even more special with the performances by the Lawhill Choir, which was also invited to perform a few weeks later at Settlers High School. Thank you to Colleen Jacka and her team for allowing us to be part of this wonderful event and to Servest for providing the transport.

CELEBRATING OUR 21 ST YEAR OF OPERATION! Our Maritime Studies programme began in 1995 with shipping line Safmarine as our anchor sponsor and it was an enormous privilege to celebrate our 21 st year in the presence of more than 50 Safmariners from around the world! What makes our birthday year even more special is that it falls in the same year as Safmarine’s 70 th! A big thank you to Safmarine CEO David Williams (pictured) and all the Safmariners for making April 28 such a special birthday!

One of the many highlights of the Safmarine Global Leadership Team’s visit to Lawhill on 28 April was the launch of the Safmarine/Lawhill Mentorship programme. Lawhill mentees (from left to right), Saluse Tswengiwe, Sushmita Nowases, Thandeka Duma, Thami Hoza and Gershwyn Poole will be mentored by Safmarine GLT members’ Thomas Theeuwes (Greater China), Safouane Bouchhioua (Ivory Coast), Gary Jeffreys (UK), David Williams (CEO) and Hasan Faraz Javed (Pakistan).

CELEBRATING SAFMARINE’S 70 TH The celebrations continued on 28 April when, a few hours after the Safmarine Global Leadership Team’s visit to our schooll, Lawhill staff, the five Safmarine mentors and Simon’s Town School Head Boy, BK Molale, joined Safmarine customers, media and the GLT in celebrating Safmarine’s 70 th birthday at a glittering function held in a top city hotel.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCES

BOKAMOSO MOLALE AND THAMI HOZA Our two budding inventors - BK Molale and Thami Hoza – who took second place two years ago in the 3 M Hip 2 B 2 SA National Young Innovators Competition were selected as one of the top 10 young innovators in Africa. They were invited to attend the Innovation Prize for Africa event in Botswana in June where they met other innovators, including last year’s prize winner (pictured, second left, with Thami). They were also the youngest innovators at the IPA event. A few days prior to their trip, they were invited to do an in-studio interview with Cape Talk’s Kieno Kammies and they also featured on a number of social media channels. Things are happening, so watch this space!

MARINE INSPIRATIONS- SPAIN An enormous thank you to Captains Anthony Just and Phil Wade and Anne Wade and all the Marine Inspirations supporters and sponsors for giving another three of our students yet another unforgettable experience in Spain. Thank you too to the General Botha Old Boys for sponsoring the travel costs and to Trevor Simpson for assisting with the shopping logistics. TNPA CAPE TOWN PORT FESTIVAL Our students had great fun at this year’s port festival hosted by TNPA Cape Town. There was so much to see and learn at the Career Exhibition! Thank you to all exhibitors for making the time to chat to our students, to TNPA for the invitation and lunch and to Smit Amandla Marine for the tug tour.

CELEBRATING THE SMIT AMANDLA TUG’S 40 TH Not many vessels get to celebrate their 40 th birthdays so it was a real honour to be at the Smit Amandla tug’s big birthday bash and to learn more about the tug from Captain Okke Grapouw, who oversaw the design and building of the tug all those years ago! The tug may be 40 years old but she is still the most powerful in the world!

VISITING THE NEW NAUTIC FACTORY AND ENJOYING A ‘SEA TRIAL’ Thank you Nautic for these two very special ‘beyond the classroom experiences!” (Can we do it again, please? )

FUN ON THE WATER Our students continue to have fun and learn new maritime skills thanks to the support of the Cape Coastal Rowing Club and the False Bay Yacht Club who have involved our students in rowing and sailing events.

TAKE A GIRL CHILD TO WORK DAY WITH TNPA Our female TNPA bursars spent an unforgettable ‘career day’ at the TNPA head office in Cape Town. The highlight was being on board the tug Merlot as it pulled a large container vessel from its berth in the Cape Town container terminal.

NEAL PETERSON’S INSPIRATIONAL TALK AT THE ROYAL CAPE YACHT CLUB Thank you to the Royal Cape Yacht Club for sponsoring the Lawhill visit to attend the inspirational talk of world-class solo around-the-world yachtsman and awarding winning author of ‘Journey of a Hope Merchant’, Neal Petersen. His message ‘there are no barriers, only solutions’ left a lasting impression on our students. Your support is greatly appreciated!

HAMSHER MAGIC SHOW AND QUIZ Yet another fun general knowledge quiz hosted by the Hamsher family was followed by an amazing magic show presented by Sebastian Hamsher. Thank you to Mark, Emile and Sebastian Hamsher for hours of fun and the fantastic prizes!

END OF TERM CUPCAKE COUNTDOWN! Thank you Mr and Mrs Visser!

MATRIC BALL APPEAL Thank you to those who responded to our Matric Ball Appeal – we were overwhelmed with the number of items donated! (So much so, we had to transform the library into a temporary clothing boutique!). For those who still wish to donate, we are in need of mens’ evening wear and shoes (sizes 6 to 12).

BUILDING HAS BEGIN. . Construction of Lawhill’s new classrooms and cabins – generously funded by the TK Foundation - has begun. Please do visit our Facebook page and website for progress updates!

Building commenced in May and is expected to be completed by October/November

HOW LAWHILL IS ‘INVESTING IN A FUTURE FEMALE GENERATION’ Lawhill head Debbie Owen and Third Engineer Blondie Jobela were proud to represent Lawhill at the 4 th annual Women in Maritime Conference held in Durban at the end of June. The event was the ideal opportunity to share the Lawhill story with delegates from South Africa, Namibia and Kenya.

PAST STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS Three of our past students, Nomkhita Mbele, Tobela Gqabu and Kelly Klaasen joined us for the Safmarine GLT visit on 28 April. They are pictured here with their Lawhill educators and mentors, Captain Godrey Schlemmer and Brian Ingpen and current students at Lawhill Nomkhita is currently commerical manager at Smit Amandla Marine, Tobela is the principal officer for SAMSA in East London and Kelly is serving as second engineer on Safmarine vessels (she has completed and passed her chief’s exams – top of the class!)

VIWE MOSIA another past student, is currently serving as third officer with Smit Amandla Marine

AUBREY SOSIBO has qualified as a navigating officer and is doing his S 3 and S 4 this year. He passed his S 3 June exams with distinctions in all six subjects!

Another past student doing us proud is Third Engineer Blondie Jobela. She is with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL). She is only one of two South African female engineers with RCCL and often the only woman in the engine room of some of the world’s largest cruiseliners!

MAERSK GROUP Thank you to Fred Jacobs, Chairman of Maersk South Africa, for introducing us to Lena Stennicke, Maersk Group, Copenhagen. We spent an enjoyable Sunday showing her our part of the world!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE YCAP TEAM Congratulations to the eight grade 10 students (all maritime students) who participated in the ‘Youth Citizen Action Programme’ (YCAP). YCAP is a social outreach programme and our team has been chosen to represent the Western Province in the National competition taking place from 22 – 24 July.

SUBTECH SPONSORS THREE GRADE 12 STUDENTS Thank you to Subtech Group for providing bursaries to three of our Grade 12 students, Gershwyn Poole, Siyamthanda Vuyelwa and Phaphama Kepu and for the work experience provided during the July holidays

SPECIAL VISITS Thank you to Professor Malek Pourzanjani, CEO of the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) and Sam Venter, SAIMI Project coordinator, for their visit. It was also a pleasure to welcome Captain David Abromowitz, who for the past few years has donated a prize to the General Botha Old Boys/SOMMSA Golf Day in support of Lawhill. Thank you to Captain Phil Wade for inviting him along!

BOWMAN GILLFILLAN Thank you to BG’s Lana Jacobs and Jared Lezar for yet another interesting legal talk – this time on ship arrests.

LWANDLE In the lead up to World Oceans Day, the team from Lwandle were back at Lawhill to share their knowledge on oceanography and aquaculture and to talk about the many career opportunities in this field.

‘FAMILY VISIT’ FROM WORCESTER It was a privilege hosting the mother of our hostel father, Mr Abrie Visser, and her friends at Lawhill. The group drove all the way from Worcester to visit us and what a special visit it was! Thank you to Mrs Heillie Visser for the catering and to our Lawhill Choir for making the visit extra special with your performances!

CLASS OF 2015 – STUDYING AND WORKING It was great to catch up with past students Lungelo ‘Smiley’ Mkhize, Apiwe Malinge, Innocent Jali and Ngitsitieseng Jama. Lungelo, Apiwe and Innocent are currently studying at CPUT (S 1 and S 2) while Ngitsietieseng is doing an internship with MSC Cape Town.

DONATIONS Included a number of interesting books and DVDs from the Maersk Group Copenhagen, valuable encyclopedias of ship technology from Wartsila and PC monitors for our new ECDIS classroom from Safmarine and Maersk

A host of items from Mr Charlie de Cooker (Safmarine Cape Town reefer department (pictured below with his wife and son), Professor Jane English from UCT(pictured below, left) who donated a beautiful glass and wood cabinet for our awards and our long-time supporter, Mr Mark Hamsher (and friends) for clothing and books. Thank you too to the South African Master Mariners Association (SOMMSA) for making the first donation (to be used for upgrading our IT facilities) to the new LAWHILL EDUCATIONAL TRUST and to Mr C. IN MEMORIUM And last, but by no means least, we said a very sad final good bye to Captain Dai Davies, a long time supporter of Lawhill. We will miss his wonderful sense of humour and cheerfulness at our annual awards evenings. (This year’s awards evening is scheduled to take place on Thursday 13 October - date to be confirmed)
