Laws and ethics We are now going to look a range of laws and ethics that link to your writing, photography and double page spread. Firstly you will outline what each one means and give an example. Then you will think about how these laws and ethics will relate to your magazine and the issues you need to think about as a writer. How will these impact on your double page spread and front cover. Copyright What is Copyright? A right which grants the creator exclusive rights to determine weather or not others can use their work. It is called copyright if you use someones work without asking them. Give examples of Copyright? For example if I made an edit of a photo or video and someone used it without asking me I could sue them for copyright. A popular game “PUBG” had a lawsuit against “FORTNITE” for copyright because both games were similar and a former worker had now been working for “epic games” the creators of ”fortnite”

Copyright How would Copyright impact your role as a writer for your double page spread and for your front cover? You could get sued if you use images that are not yours by right and if you don’t ask the creators if you can use them. There may be a long process in asking the creators for permission and some may turn you down and say you cant use their work. It also protects the creators work because people cannot claim to have made things you have.

Defamation - Libel What is Defamation – what does it mean? Destroying someone’s reputation. Give examples of Defamation? Calling someone a liar or thief in local media therefore destroying the reputation of said person. An actress called Rebel Wilson brought an action against the Women’s Day magazine. The complaint concerned articles published by Women’s Day claiming Wilson lied about her name, age, upbringing and life events.

It could impact the creator because people will think if the writer has written it then the writer is a liar and cannot be trusted. If someone has written the tings about the creator and the creator doesn't sue or doesn't win the case, then people will think the said things are true.

Confidentiality What is confidentiality, think about this in your role of a writer? Confidentiality is a law that allows personal information private and safe. Give examples of confidentiality? A nurse had written about someone’s private hospital records and had been sacked for it. This is an example of breaching confidentiality

Confidentiality How would Confidentiality impact your role as a writer for your double page spread and for your front cover? if a writer reveals information about someone hey will be frowned upon because of confidentiality rules. The writer could lose his job. If someone reveals confidential information about the writer people could find out where they live and the writer could be in serious danger.

Representation Explain what representation means for you as a writer? speaking or acting on behalf of someone Give examples of representation? Most news papers women are writing on behalf on other people because newspaper producers have learnt their target audience are mostly females, this is an example because the women are writing on behalf of someone else.

Representation How would Representation impact your role as a writer for your double page spread and for your front cover? It could effect the writers job because it could not be true as its not the actual person talking for themselves. People will also think it’s a biased view and will not want to read the article resulting in the author's career gone.

IPSO What is the IPSO? they help to maintain freedom of expression for the press in newspapers and magazines. Give examples of the IPSO’s work? they regulate for the newspapers and magazines. they protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism.

IPSO How would the work of the IPSO impact your role as a writer for your double page spread and for your front cover? It ensures the writers work is to the appropriate target audience, he IPSO could make it harder to publish because if a writer writes about something that is not acceptable then their work will not be published at it may cause them to be very hard for people to discover them.
