Homework
10/21/16 I can determine how the important protein molecule known as an enzyme functions. LAUNCH: QUIZ: CEHMISTRY OF LIFE & Ph n When you are done with your quiz raise your hand, bring scantron to me, get your p. H lab and finish analysis questions. Homework: • STUDY ALL NOTES. QUATERLY COMING SOON
Finish p. H lab questions
10/24/16 I can determine how the important protein molecule known as an enzyme functions. LAUNCH: Homework: • Review book complete chapter 1 DUE FRIDAY • • • Review book complete chapter 2 DUE MONDAY Castle learning assignment DUE FRIDAY QUIZ Friday on CHEMISTRY OF LIFE & ENZYMES.
LAUNCH The Four Organic Compounds Building Bocks 1. 2. 3. 4.
Think about it What do you know about enzymes? How do enzymes help food to get digested?
Enzymes
I. Enzymes control many vital functions: n n n They do not cause reactions to take place. They speed up reaction rate by decreasing activation energy (act as catalysts) Enzymes are also Known as Biological Catalyst.
Enzyme-Substrate Complex n n n Enzymes are shape-specific The enzyme grabs onto the substrate (substance acted on by the enzyme) that has a special area called the active site. The active site is a specially shaped area of the enzyme that fits around the substrate.
Enzyme-Substrate Complex
THINK ABOUT IT The shape of an enzyme is very important, Why?
Types of Reactions 1. n 2. n Digestion BREAKING DOWN MOLECULES. Synthesis BUILDING UP MOLECULES.
ENZYME ACTION LAB
10/26/16 I can describe factors that effect the rate of enzyme action. LAUNCH: n n Copy objective & HW (Have enzyme notes out). Complete questions 1 -7 on p. 139 -140 in your review book. Homework: • Review book complete chapter 1 DUE FRIDAY • • • Review book complete chapter 2 DUE MONDAY Castle learning assignment DUE FRIDAY QUIZ Friday on CHEMISTRY OF LIFE & ENZYMES.
LAUNCH Questions 1 -7 on p. 139 -140 in your review book n n n n 1. 1 2. 1 3. 2 4. 2 n n n 5. 2 6. 1 7. 4
THINK ABOUT IT n Most of your body functions at a temperature close to 98. 6 F (32 C), what do you think would happen if the temperature of your body increased to 101? 103? 106? Etc.
Question: n How do environmental factors, such as temperature & p. H effect the functioning of enzymes? ?
II. Conditions Affecting Enzymes slow down and eventually STOP WORKING when conditions are not right. (denature-change shape) n Certain temperature ranges (too extreme, enzymes will misshapen and lose function) n Certain p. H ranges. What p. H do you think is optimum for enzymes to work in your stomach? ________ n Amount of enzyme/substrate
III. Examples of enzymes n Saliva contains enzymes that starts the chemical digestion process in your mouth. n n Ex. Amylase digests ______ Common enzyme disorder: Lactose intolerance is a condition caused by a lack of an enzyme called lactase. Without lactase the body is unable to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk products. n Protease n Lipase
How do we recognize an enzyme? *Hint… How to spot an enzyme… their name ends in –ase*

ENZYME ACTION LAB Let’s complete enzyme action lab When you finish, work on Chapter 1 & 2 in your review book
Enzyme action lab 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Enzymes are proteins that speed up reactions. Substrate is a substance that an enzyme acts on. The place where a substate attaches to an enzyme. The shape of the enzyme fits a specific substrate. Synthesis is the building up of molecules. Digestion is the breaking down of molecul

10/27/16 I can describe factors that effect the rate of enzyme action. LAUNCH: n n Copy objective & HW (Have enzyme notes out). Complete questions 8 -12 on p. 140 – 141 in your review book. Homework: • Review book complete chapter 1 DUE FRIDAY • • • Review book complete chapter 2 DUE MONDAY Castle learning assignment DUE FRIDAY QUIZ Friday on CHEMISTRY OF LIFE & ENZYMES.
LAUNCH Questions 8 -12 on p. 140 -141 in your review book n n n 8) 4 9) 3 10) 2
LAUNCH Questions 8 -12 on p. 140 -141 in your review book n n 11) 2 12) Simple glucose molecules bond chemically to form complex carbohydrate molecules.
Understanding… Where does a substrate attach to the enzyme? What 2 types of reactions can enzymes perform? What 2 environmental factors can change the shape of (denature) an enzyme? …………. . & ………….
n Denature: To treat (a protein or the like) by chemical or physical means so as to alter its original state. n Example: when a protein’s shape is changed due to an environmental factor.
Recall 2 types of reactions: 1. n ________ Builds molecules up. Ex. Micromolecule to macromolecule v v 2. n glucose to starch amino acids to proteins ________ Breaks molecules down. Ex. Macromolecule to micromolecule v v protein to amino acids starch to glucose
Lab Activity: Does temperature affect an enzyme reaction?
Organic Substance Building Blocks Carbohydrates Proteins Lipids Nucleic Acids To which group of organic compounds do enzymes belong? The process of adding simple building blocks to make a complex molecules is known as a ________reaction. The process of breaking down complex molecules into simple building blocks is known as a ________reaction.
