Historic Component • • Latino-American Jazz was started in 1895, in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. African-American were not treated as people in 1800 s New Orleans allowed slaves to own drum Was invented as a way to express feelings.

Musician: Mongo Santamaria • • • Mongo Santamaria (April 7, 1917 - February 1, 2013) was born in Havana, Cuba. He is a rumba quinto master and an Afro Cuban Latin Jazz percussionist. He is most famous for composing the jazz standard “Afro Blue”. He was dropped out of school to become an professional musician and use drum as his main instruments As his occupation after he was dropped out of school he was an performer He also received a grammy award in 1977 as the best latin recording
