Mayan Achievements �Built impressive cities with stone temples, pyramids, plazas, palaces, and ball courts. �Farmers and traders. Grew corn, beans, and squash. �Traded salt, chocolate, and cotton with other cultures. �Created the 365 day calendar by studying the stars. Used the calendar to identify important dates throughout the year. �First people to use the concept of “zero” �Developed a writing system- glyphs.
Mayan Decline � 900 A. D. , cities were abandoned for unknown reasons. � Descendants still live in the region today.
Aztec Empire
Aztec Region and Time Period �Northern Mexico and the Valley of Mexico � 1300 s A. D. - 1500 s
Aztec Achievements �Built strong military empire through warfare and by collecting tribute- money, goods, or crops- from the people they defeated. �Their capital city, Tenochtitlan, included houses and causeways. �Build pyramids to honor the sun and war god.
Aztec Adaptations �Built chinampas, island gardens, to grow food and flowers in their watery environment.
Aztec Decline �Conquered by Hernan Cortes and the Spanish in 1521.
Inca Communication
Inca Region and Time Period �Andes Mountains in what is now Peru. � 1400 s-1533
Inca Achievements �Built aqueducts to irrigate the land. �Grazed llamas. �Built 14, 000 miles of roads on which runners carried messages. �Quipus (kee-poos) used as a counting tool.
Inca Adaptations �Cut terraces into the mountainsides in order to grow corn and potatoes. �Built aqueducts and canals to irrigate the land. �Built 14, 000 miles of roads.
Inca Decline �Conquered by Francisco Pizarro in 1533.
