Promotion Criteria 1. How do you get promoted at the Intermediate School? Answer: 1. You take 6 classes per semester at Lathrop. 2. Each class you take is worth 5 credits. 1. You’ll receive 5 credits for each class you pass with a grade of A, B, C, or D. 2. You’ll receive 0 credits for any class you fail. 3. Let’s do some math! 6 Classes X 5 Credits 30 credits per Semester X 2 semesters per year 60 credits per year 4. You are required to earn 45 credits (9 classes) to earn a promotion to the next grade.

Scenario 1 Heather is a 7 th grade student and earned 20 credits from the first semester. How many credits does Heather need to earn to promote to 8 th grade? Heather needs to earned 25 credits, 20 + 25 = 45 credits On her most recent report card she received the following grades: Language Arts 7 B Math 7 C Science 7 F Social Science 7 D Physical Ed A Robotics C Will Heather earn her promotion to 8 th grade? Yes, Heather will promote to 8 th grade, she will earn 45 credits for the year.

Grades Matter A grade point average G. P. A. measures how well a student is doing by indicating a student’s average grade. The G. P. A. is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credits attempted. Grade points are awarded as follows: A = 4, B = 3, C= 2, D = 1, and F = 0 All classes are 5 credits. If a student earns an A in Language Arts, they receive 5 credits times 4 points (for the A) for a total 20 grade points. This same student earns a C in Math. That’s 5 credits times 2 points for 10 grade points. So this student has earned 30 grade points for 10 credits. Let’s calculate their G. P. A. Grade Points Credits Attempted G. P. Important Points 1. You must earn 45 credits a year to promote to the next grade level. 2. You earn 5 credits if you pass your class with an A, B, C, or D. 1. You get the same 5 credits for an A as you do for a D. 2. Credits mean you passed a class not how well you did. 3. Grades tell us how well you did. 1. You get 4 grade points for an A, but only 1 grade point for a D. 1. This is the difference between credits and G. P. A.

High School Graduation Requirements Santa Ana Unified has two graduation requirements. 1. The first requirement answers the question, How Many? How many credits do you need to earn? At Lathrop the answer to this question is 45 credits. You are required to 45 credits a year in order to promote to the next grade. High School also requires that you earn a certain number of credits. However, in high school you must earn them over four years of high school. 2. The second requirement answers the question, What? What classes do you have to pass? These are called course requirements.

THE A-G COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS The A-G / College Entrance Requirements are high school classes that students must complete (with a grade of C or better) to be eligible for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU). They are the lowest level of academic preparation that high school students should achieve to undertake university work. Additional Information on the A-G / College Entrance Requirements: The purposes of the A-G / College Entrance Requirements are to ensure that entering students: • Can take and pass first year college classes at UC and CSU without remediation. • Have learned the skills and subject knowledge that will allow them to succeed in a rigorous learning environment • Have attained essential critical thinking and study skills.

COLLEGE A-G REQUIREMENTS Courses required for admission to the University of California and California State University A. History/Social Science 2 Years One year of U. S. History or ½ year of U. S. History and ½ American Civics or American Government. CSU requires one additional year of Social Science. UC requires one additional year of World History, Cultures and Geography. UC requires one year of History/Social Science completed by the end of the 11 grade. of World History/Cultures/Geography. B. English 4 Years College preparatory English composition and literature (no more than 1 year of Advanced ESL/ELD) C. Mathematics 3 Years (4 years recommended) Algebra, Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, or Higher Level Mathematics. UC recommends four years of college-preparatory mathematics that include the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two- and three-dimensional geometry. Courses that address the aforementioned content areas and include, or integrated, trigonometry or statistics are acceptable.

COLLEGE A-G REQUIREMENTS Courses required for admission to the University of California and California State University D. Laboratory Science 2 Years (3 years recommended) CSU requires on year of Biological Science and one year of Physical Science. UC recommends three years with at least two in the following areas: Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. E. Language Other Than English (Foreign Language) 2 Years (3 years recommended) Must be 2 years of the same language. UC recommends three years. American Sign Language is acceptable. UC requires one year to be completed by the end of 11 th grade. F. Visual and Performing Arts 1 Year Dance, Drama/Theater, Music, and Visual Arts 1 year of the same course. G. College Preparatory Elective 1 Year One additional year chosen from the above A-G subject areas or a year of another approved alternative elective. * Required a-g courses must be completed with a letter grade of C or better. ** UC requires at least 11 of the a-g courses to be completed by the end of the 11 th grade year.

Scenario 2 Heather is now in 12 th grade. At the end of the year she will have earned 235 credits. She has worked hard, after failing her Language Arts class her 1 st semester of 9 th grade, and has a 3. 25 G. P. A. She has been accepted to, and is looking forward to attending, San Francisco State University. Will Heather graduate from High School and be able to attend San Francisco State University? Why or Why not? Heather will NOT graduate. Since she is not a high school graduate, she will not be able to attend San Francisco State University. While she met the 220 credit requirement, she did not meet her course requirements or the B requirement of the a-g course requirements for admission to the CSU system. She failed her 1 st semester of Language Arts in 9 th grade and did not retake it.

Scenario 2 Good news! Heather was able to retake her Language Arts class in summer school and passed it with an A. She was also able to defer her admission to San Francisco State University for a year and will enter as a freshman a year later. REMEMBER YOU MUST MEET BOTH GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS. 1) EARN 220 CREDITS. 2) PASS ALL COURSE REQUIREMENTS THERE ARE NO IRREGULAR GRADUATIONS
