If a preposition can use “de” • Only some prepositions can have “de” after them. • Entre, aquí, allá, en, por, etc. DO NOT use “de”. • Use the “de” if there is a location / point of reference after the preposition. If there is a noun after the preposition. If there is no noun after the preposition, drop the “de”. • Ex: La biblioteca está a la derecha de la clase de Sra. Boatman. (The library is to the right of Mrs. Boatman’s class is the point of reference). • Ex: La biblioteca está a la derecha. (The library is to the right. There is no point of reference, de is NOT used. )
The Contraction “del” • When de is followed by el (the article = the) it becomes del. • de el doesn’t exist. • de el = NUNCA, NUNCA • Ex. El perro está detrás del chico. • De la doesn’t change. • Ex. El baño está al lado de la oficina.
