Never… • remove the battery from the laptop. • eat or drink while using the laptop. • leave laptop in car overnight. Extreme temperature changes can damage the laptop.
Things you should not do… • Do not leave laptops in unsupervised area, including cafeteria, computer lab, locker rooms, media center, unlocked classrooms, gyms, restrooms, hallways, etc. • Leaving your laptop in a locked or unlocked car does not count as secure. • Do Not use laptops during sporting activities and events.
Wireless not working? !? ! Try these steps in order. You may be successful after the first step. • Reboot the laptop. • Plug Ethernet cable into laptop and reboot. • With laptop connected to Ethernet cable, go to Student Menu> Maintence> Wireless enable.
Can I make any changes to the laptop? No. Do not change the wallpaper, screen saver or any other settings on the laptop. Do not share passwords with anyone. You are responsible for everything that happens under your account. Shhh!! Don’t tell anyone!!
Do not take your laptops to away games, matches, or meets. You should leave them secured in your locker or locked in a coaches classroom or office.
Laptops are not to be loaned to anyone. This includes friends and family members. It is for your use ONLY!! • Charge your laptop each night. • Remove all flash drives before closing laptop case. • Do not carry laptop while case is open. • Do not write, draw, paint, place stickers or tape on laptops or case.
• My Documents, shared drive and public drives are for school files only. Please do not save personal stuff to these areas. • When away from school you will need to save your files to a flash drive. • ALWAYS make a back-up of your files. The server is not a fail safe. • Music, games, or programs are not to be downloaded, installed or saved to the hard drive or shared drives. It is a violation of Wilkes County Schools Acceptable Use Policy and may be a violation of Federal Copyright Laws.
Before leaving school… • Shutdown the laptop completely. • Hibernate, Sleep or Stand. By does not shut down the laptop completely. Before Leaving Home… • Make sure you shut down completely before returning to school. • This practice will make the laptop run better.
By-passing the Internet filter is against Wilkes County Schools Policy. CIPA (Child Internet Protection Act) requires a filter for school and home use while on the laptop. Use of Ultra Surf and other software will result in disciplinary action and possible fines. Use of Ultra Surf has resulted in downloading viruses, deleting documents, and disabling wifi. Each laptop Ultra Surf has been used on must be reimaged. This process is time consuming and makes the ITF cranky.
Social Networking, instant messaging, and accessing chat rooms are against WCS policy. This includes Facebook, My. Space, Twitter, and Google +. NEVER share or post personal information online. Posting full names, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, or passwords. Connecting to the Internet for the first time this year… When connecting to the Internet for the first time, students will have to enter their student number and password along with wilkes. k 12. nc. us. Example: 123456@wilkes. k 12. nc. us (This is not your email address. You will be receiving those later. ) It must be in this format or students will not be allowed access to the Internet. Once they have entered this they will have to click “Accept” and can then go to the website. You should only have to do this one time.
Battery Care • When the battery warning pops up, you need to plug in the charger so that the battery does not completely discharge. The HP batteries the completely discharge will require the attention of the ITF or Technician before it will recharge.
REPAIRS • DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE REPAIRS TO THE LAPTOP OR ITS ACCESSORIES. • You damage it, You pay for it.
