I can name some different languages. I can compare my life to that of children from different cultures and countries. I know some facts about one country. I can compare different places and countries. I can imagine what it would be like to be a child in a different country. I have made contact with someone from a different country. I know how children of different cultures celebrate special days. I can listen to and compare stories from different countries. I can present information about an aspect of culture. I can compare attitudes towards everyday life.

I can memorise words and short phrases. I can use what I already know to work out how to say new words. I can make sentences using my knowledge of how the new language works. I can do an action to show I understand. I can listen to someone carefully. I can compare the new language I am learning to English. I can plan and prepare an activity or presentation I can use a dictionary to look up spellings and new words. I can use actions and rhymes and play games to help me to remember things. I can write new words. I can practise with friends. I can use clues to help me work out the meanings of new words.

I can often copy the pronunciation of words. I can match letters and words with sounds. I know how to be polite in the language I am learning. I know if I am being asked a question. I understand why adjectives sometimes have to change their spelling. I can ask a question. I understand that nouns are either masculine or feminine. I know if somebody is saying that they are not feeling or doing something. I can recognise patterns. I can change things in a sentence to make my own sentence. I can say that I am not doing or feeling something. I understand that words might come in a different order. I can use my knowledge of the rules in the language to write or say a short passage.

Listening I can…. . Grade 1 understand a few familiar spoken words and phrases. Grade 2 understand a range of familiar spoken phrases. Grade 3 understand the main points from a short spoken passage. Grade 4 understand the main points and some detail from a short spoken passage.

Speaking I can ……. . Grade 1 say /repeat a few words and short simple phrases. Grade 2 answer simple questions and give basic information. Grade 3 ask and answer simple questions and talk about my interests. Grade 4 take part in a simple conversation and I can express my opinions.

Reading I can…. . Grade 1 recognise and read out a few familiar words and phrases. Grade 2 understand familiar written phrases. Grade 3 understand the main point(s) from a short passage in clear printed script. Grade 4 understand the main points and some of the detail from a short written passage.

Writing I can ……. . Grade 1 write or copy simple words or symbols. Grade 2 write one or two short sentences and fill the words in on a simple form. Grade 3 write two to three short sentences using reference materials/with the support of a peer. Grade 4 write a short passage on a familiar topic using reference materials/with the support of a peer.
