Language Translation Human ~VS~ Machine
The Human translation process 1. Decoding the meaning of the source; and 2. Re-encoding this meaning in the target language -Because language is very complex; -Words have so many different meanings a translator must know which word to use in the right context -Must know about the culture involved with both the speakers so they won’t offend anyone. For example; “Break a leg” means good luck, not to literally break a leg.
Machine Translation Is a task of automatically converting one natural language into another without relying on a human translator, programs such as Google translate is an example.
This is Maria… Maria is a high school student. She is taking a foreign language class. . . It is sunday night. . .
10: 30 PM Maria just realized she has homework due tomorrow!
Google Translate -Quicker -Easily Accessible -Its Free!
According to a study Out of 450 students more than 80 % admitted that they used Google Translate for their homework. They answered that because of Google Translate that they knew how to write 58 languages--- 58 being the number of languages that Google Translate has.
Errors of Machine Translation -If the computer doesn’t recognize a word it completely omits it out of the content given to translate; giving the content a different meaning -Computer translator cannot make the difference between the verb tense; -Quality is very low without human intervention. -Does not learn the way humans do.
Human Vs Machine -Machine is much faster -Machine is easily accessible -Machine is cost effective, even free at times But… -Human can be 100% accurate; Machine, at its best, only 85% accurate -Quality is better than quantity
In Conclusion Don’t be like Maria… Don’t Procrastinate… Don’t Rely on Google Translate. . .
