Sentence Types § Simple- A sentence with only 1 complete thought § Complex- A sentence that begins with an incomplete thought followed by a comma then a complete thought § Compound- Two complete thoughts joined by a conjunction and comma or semicolon
Examples of Sentence Types o o o Simple- The lion got loose at the circus. Complex- Because I didn’t take my vitamins, I got sick. Compound- She fell into the gorilla enclosure at the zoo; it was hours before they got her out
Sentence Examples • When Group- A phrase that gives when something • • happened Why Group- A phrase that gives why an event happened Where Group- A phrase that gives where something happened Conditional Clause- A phrase that has one event being dependent on another Surround the Noun- A phrase with a noun that has an adjective on both sides of it with the second one
Examples for Sentences • When Group- After school, I dug a hole. • Why Group- To play in the game on Saturday, I had to get an A+ on my math test • Where Group- At the Museum, I saw a dinosaur skeleton come to life • Conditional Clause- If you light the wick, the stick of dynamite will explode • Surround the Noun- The shaved cat with pointy ears, attacked the teacher
Parts of Speech Proper Noun- The title of a person place or thing Pronoun- Replacement for the noun Conjunction- A word used to combine two independent clauses Adverb and Adjective- Descriptive words Prepositional Phrase- A word that shows location and the word that follows
Examples of Parts of Speech n n n Proper Noun- We ran to Space Mountain to find that it was closed Pronoun- She saw her hamster running down he road Conjunction- She died her hair blue so her mom freaked out Adverb and Adjective- The clog dancing shoes weren’t the right color. Prepositional Phrase- I put my hand in the jar and it got stuck
Figurative Language • Simile- A comparison of different things using like or as • Metaphor- A comparison of different things not using like or as • Hyperbole- An exaggeration • Personification- Making an inanimate object come to life • Alliteration-Multiple words in a sentence that begins with the same consonant • Idiom- A figure of speech not meant to be taken literally
Examples of Figurative Language l l l Simile- She could run as fast as a turtle. Metaphor- The baby’s voice was a siren Hyperbole- My backpack weighed a ton Personification- The water danced down the stream Alliteration- The toad told me not to take the test Idiom- It’s raining cats and dogs
