Language 1 & Language 2: Comparing and Contrasting Teaching and Learning the Language 2 Language 1 -Student has probably been immersed in this language from an early age due to interaction with others. -Student has the support of other students who understand the material in the class -Students at least have some idea of the uses of the native language. -Teacher may be able to assume that students know certain references/pieces of information that are commonly known for native speakers. -Teacher should hit as many modalities of learning as possible -Teacher should emphasize and ensure understanding of vocabulary -Teacher should create a positive learning environment (encouragement) -Student may not have adequate practice at home/parental support (L 1: parents aren’t involved in school work or do not know how to help with schoolwork; L 2: parents can’t help with homework due to language barrier) -School provides reading and math support to the students who need it -Student may not be immersed in this language, be exposed to the language, or be able to practice the language at home (i. e. the student’s family may not speak English) -Students may not feel comfortable to ask questions to the teacher or other students due to the language barrier -Students must start learning the language with little or no knowledge of the language. -Teacher may need to repeat often in class in order that the student understands. -Teachers can not take for granted certain things that they assume the student should know (cultural references, etc. ) -ELL teacher may be utilized to help the student learn the language
