Landscape of bagel places in Diamond Bar Aileen
Landscape of bagel places in Diamond Bar Aileen Wang GEO 1020 Fall 2019 (Ground Report, 2017)
Why I chose this topic? ● Julies Cafe and Bageloo are two popular bagel places. I chose to do a landscape reading of both of these places because they are 2 places I go to frequently. I always thought it was interesting how these two places can do equally well even though they are near each other. After I read the Graves chapter on Economic Geography I realized what they were doing is hotelling. (Ground Report, 2017)

Similarities and differences ● Similarities: ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ Type of Music Being played Include indoor and outdoor seating Interior design Types of Items on menu(bagel, coffee) Many middle aged customers Includes outdoor seating In a busy plaza Open and closes at around the same time Vegan Friendly ● Differences: ○ ○ Customers: Not as many gym people at Bageloo than at Julies Size: Bageloo is bigger than Julies cafe Food options: Bageloo has more options on its menu Julies cafe is located in a bigger plaza-more parking
Why? Why are there certain customers in one bagel place and not the other? ● Julies Cafe: There are more gym people who come here because CRUNCH gym is located directly across from it. ● Bageloo: a lot of middle aged koreans come here because of the hair salon and medical center located in the plaza. Why is Julies Cafe and Bageloo always busy? ● The two places are both located in a busy plaza at a high traffic road. (Map, 2019)
What is Happening? Why is Julie’s Cafe and Bageloo able to do equally well even though they are next to each other? Possible explanation: Harold Hotelling’s Hotelling Model ● The idea he came up with was that if competing businesses are selling a similar product, customers will pick the one with the shortest distance. He introduces the logic that the retail locations eventually ends up at a point where the potential number of customers is reached. Eventually an equilibrium will be reached and each business will have 50 percent of the customers(Graves, 274).
Figure 1: illustrates the logic of Hotelling’s Model (Graves, 734)
Where do we see it? Everywhere. Hotels (Review Journal, 2018) Gas Stations (Daily. Mail, 2013) Restaurants (Planetizen, 2013)
What I learned from this landscape. . . ● I learned from this landscape that a location of a business can affect the types/number of customers. Businesses do differently in different locations. Location is a huge factor in determining how well a certain business is going to do(Graves, 273). ● I also learned the reason why many business places open so close together. This is because both parties are able to benefit from each other - “A win situation”(Sim. An, 1).
