Mountain
Mountain: Sloping land highest above sea level; it is at least 1, 000 feet higher than the land around it.
Plateau
Plateau: Flat land surface which rises sharply above it’s surroundings. It is kind of like a mountain, but with a flat top. Also called a “Mesa”.
Valley
Valley: A stretch of low land between hills or mountains; may have a river running through it.
Volcano
Volcano: A cone-shaped hill or mountain around a vent in the Earth’s crust. It can be Active, Dormant, or Extinct.
Canyon
Canyon: A long, narrow valley between high cliffs, often with a stream flowing through it. Example: the Grand Canyon.
Plains Large area of relatively flat land. Often it is flat, grassy land.
River
River: Fresh water that flows together and cuts a downhill path through land.
Delta
Delta: At the mouth of a river where it joins another body of water, sediment collects to make land. Often looks like a hand or a fork!
Lake
Lake: An inland body of water. That is, a large pool of water surrounded on every side by land.
Island
Island: A piece of land completely surrounded by water.
Peninsula
Peninsula: A piece of land surrounded on three sides by water. Example: Italy
Isthmus
Isthmus: A narrow piece of land connecting two larger pieces of land.
Strait/Channel
Strait/Channel: A narrow body of water connecting two larger bodies of water.
Bay
Bay: A part of sea or lake that cuts into the shoreline. Smaller than a gulf.
