LANCE MODIS • Collection 5 and Collection 6 processing streams in operation • C

LANCE MODIS • Collection 5 and Collection 6 processing streams in operation • C 5 stream will be discontinued at MODAPS and LANCE NRT on Dec 31, 2016 since more that 1 year has passed of overlapping production • Latency and product quality L 1 B, Geolocation and L 2 products generated within 3 hours after acquisition All daily tiled L 2 G and L 3 products available by end of the day 8 -day rolling LSR and VI available a day later All L 2 and daily tiles products match to science quality products from MODAPS. Summary available at http: //lance 3. modaps. eosdis. nasa. gov/data_products/comparison_land. php • 8 -day products not expected to match to operational products – NRT processing uses trailing 8 days, and operational processing uses leading 8 days. • • • New products and status • BRDF-Albedo (Oct 2016): NRT version of this PGE is currently under testing. • Evapotranspiration: Proposed to UWG. Operational processing at MODAPS is expected to start in October 2016.

LANCE VIIRS - Current • LANCE is currently receiving data from the processing stream

LANCE VIIRS - Current • LANCE is currently receiving data from the processing stream on NRT 3 (AS 3003) Processes time-based PDS files Uses NASA L 1, but IDPS Calibration and Geo process for L 1 B and Geo products Products delivered: L 2 Fire (375 m) and L 2 G Surface Reflectance Average latency is about 6 to 7 hours Granules products are 5 min size All products are in HDF 4 Uses LPEATE version of the PGEs for L 2 and L 2 G (IDPS PGEs ported for operation at Land PEATE with NASA science team recommended changes). • LSR product not expected to be of same science quality as operational V 1 available from LAADS • •

LANCE VIIRS – Transition to V 1 in progress • Test in progress processing

LANCE VIIRS – Transition to V 1 in progress • Test in progress processing the session based PDS files on NRT 4 • Two processing streams being tested – Land PEATE version of PGEs in AS 3003 and the Land SIPS V 1 version of PGEs in AS 5000 • AS 5000 uses NASA L 1 B Calibration and Geolocation process • Products generated: L 2 Fire (375 m) and L 2 G Surface Reflectance • Average latency is about 3. 2 hours (min 2. 1 and max 4) for LSR product, 2. 8 hours for Fire product. • Granules products are 5 minutes in LPEATE version and 6 minutes in the LSIPS version • Product format – HDF 4 in LPEATE version and HDF 5 in LSIPS version. • LSR product from the NRT LSIPS stream is expected to be of same science quality as the operational V 1 product from Land SIPS.

LANCE VIIRS – Operational V 1 • NRT 3 and NRT 4 will be

LANCE VIIRS – Operational V 1 • NRT 3 and NRT 4 will be configured to run operational V 1 PGEs generating LANCE VIIRS products. (mid-October 2016). • Will use the session based input • Will use NASA V 2. 0 version of L 1 B/Geo and V 1 PGEs from Land SIPS. (V 2. 0 L 1 B expected to be released on Oct 3, 2016. ) • Products generated L 2 Fire (375 m) and L 2 G Surface Reflectance. L 2 snow expected to be operational by mid-October. • Products will be released to the public once the PI for the product approves the NRT version. • Expected latency is 3 hour for all L 2 products and 1 -day for daily tiled products. • Granules are 6 min size. Products designated for public distribution at Land SIPS will be in HDF 5 and so these will be in HDF 5 at NRT also. E. g. L 2 G LSR. • All products are expected to be of same science quality as the operational V 1 product from Land SIPS.

Summary • Lance users will receive only C 6 MODIS NRT products after Dec 31, 2016. • MODIS BRDF-Albedo could be available by mid October 2016. • VIIRS L 2 Fire, and L 2 G LSR products currently available to users • Processes time-based inputs, so latency is about 6 -7 hours • Mostly uses processes from Land PEATE. Products are not expected to match to the operational V 1 products from Land SIPS. • New Processing stream currently under testing is expected to be operational by mid-October • Will use session-based input, so expected to meet the 3 -hour latency for all products. • Will use the V 2. 0 NASA L 1 B/Geo process and the NASA science team V 1 PGEs used by V 1 processing at Land SIPS. • All products are expected to be of same science quality as the V 1 products from Land SIPS. • Products to be released to users following approval from PI.
