Laguna Newsletter August/September Welcome back Longhorn Families! We hope you had a calm, relaxing summer. We are ready to have students back in classroom and get working on a new year. We are often asked how to help students be more successful academically. We offer the following tips to help make this school year successful for all. ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ Read every day! Daily reading increases vocabulary. Students who read at least 20 minutes daily at home will read 1, 800, 000 words during the school year. Be positive, speak well of your child’s teacher and learning. Encourage your child to share what he/she learned at school. Create a consistent after-school routine including meal times, homework time, and play time (A visual display is helpful for students to understand their expectations). Ensure your child is getting plenty of sleep each night, so they can be on time for school daily. Encourage your child in all aspects of academics. Praise student success and their efforts. Teach your child to be responsible for their actions, encourage him/her to take responsibility for getting ready for school in the morning. Get ready the night before by putting everything needed in the backpack and pick out clothes for the next day. Stay involved! If interested, inquire about volunteering within the classroom or about ways to support your child’s learning at home. Communicate! Keep in regular contact with your child’s teacher. Attendance We cannot teach a child who does not attend school on a daily basis. It is important for your child to be at school on time daily. The state of Arizona (A. R. S § 15 – 803) states that a student is habitually truant from school when he/she misses 5 school days. This year students with 5 unverified absences (no one let the office know the reason for the absence) or excessive absences (10% or 18 days) will require a meeting with the principal to create a plan to increase your child’s attendance. If your child is ill, has a fever, or is vomiting he/she should stay at home to keep from spreading germs to others. Attendance Line: 696 -4808 We are ready for a great year and by working together we can make great things happen for your child! Have a great year! Ms. Camacho Laguna’s Camp Longhorn Program is back! Laguna Newsletter Math Help at Home Reading Help at Home We hear that helping students with math at home is difficult because students now learn math in a different way than we did as students. Here are some ways you can help with math at home on a regular basis to build number sense which is a basic skill that is extremely important for your student to understand difficult math concepts. ✭ Count your steps as you take a walk. Count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. ✭ Have students count out items for you. It is good ✭ ✭ practice to count both forwards and backwards. Try starting at a number other than one. Give your child coins to practice counting money. Have children point out patterns they find. Let your child help you cook. Cooking involves a lot of counting and measuring. Show your child that math is in our everyday lives. STUDENT APPRECIATION NIGHT Students, parents, faculty and staff of Laguna are invited to attend the FWHS vs Palm Desert Football game on Friday, August 31, 2018 @ 7: 00 PM! This is important to promote a safe, serious, and positive learning environment.

Students are expected to be respectful to other students and staff at all times on our campus, or during sponsored events. Each grade level has appropriate discipline plans. Laguna Elementary School has many programs in place to teach and reinforce positive character traits. Absences Students who miss school fall behind in their learning. The following is important information regarding absences. ❃ A student is considered absent when he/she is not in school on any scheduled school day. ❃ Flowing Wells School District Policy says that student absences are not to exceed ten days per year. ❃ A physician should excuse any absence beyond ten days. ❃ It is the parents’ responsibility to report their child’s absence to the school office the same day of the absence. ❃ You may call 696 -8450 or 696 -4808 to report an absence. ❃ When leaving a message remember to state your student’s full name, the teacher’s name, the reason for the absence, and who is calling (include the relationship to the child). ❃ Any absence not reported to the office will be counted as an unexcused absence (FW Policy JH-R) If a student’s absences become excessive parents/guardians will be contacted for a meeting to design a plan to improve on time, regular attendance at school. State Law (A. R. S. § 15 -803) states children up to age 16 must attend school daily. It is the parents/guardians responsibility to ensure this happens.
