Visitors are not allowed in the labs. Only instructors, Technical Assistants, stockroom personnel, students in the scheduled section, and students with permission to conduct makeup experiments are allowed. Know the locations of fire alarms, fire extinguishers, chemical fume hoods, safety showers, and emergency eye washes. Notify your T. A. immediately of any injury, spill, fire, or explosion. Keep your lab space clean and organized. Books, backpacks, jackets, etc. are not allowed in areas where chemicals are used. NEVER leave an ongoing experiment unattended. Do not taste anything. If instructed to smell a chemical, do so by carefully fanning the top of test tube or bottle so that a little of the vapor is directed towards your nose. Never remove chemicals from the labs or stockrooms without proper authorization. Unauthorized experiments, work, and preparations are not allowed! Laboratory safety rules 2 11. Wash your hands and arms with soap and water before you leave the lab - even if you have been wearing gloves. 12. Always know the hazards and physical and chemical properties of the materials used. Read labels carefully. 13. Label all containers to avoid errors. 14. Try to dispense only what will be needed. Share any excess. Do not waste chemicals. Dispose of excess chemicals in appropriate waste containers. 15. All glassware and tools must be washed after use. 16. Return equipment, chemicals, aprons, and protective glasses to their designated locations. 17. Dispose of all waste in an appropriate manner. Read waste container labels carefully. 18. Do not use flames in the labs unless specifically instructed to do so. 19. Wear gloves when appropriate, following proper procedures for choosing glove type. 20. Treat every chemical as if it were hazardous! 21. Before leaving the laboratory, ensure that gas lines and water faucets are shut off. Laboratory safety rules
