Laboratory Safety
Rule #1 Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory.
Rule #2 Follow ALL instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction, ASK YOUR TEACHER BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ACTIVITY!
Rule #3 Never work alone in the laboratory. Teacher’s gotta be there.
Rule #4 Do not touch anything in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so.
Rule #5 Perform only those experiments authorized by your teacher. Carefully follow all instructions, both written and oral. Unauthorized experiments are not allowed.
Rule #6 Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in laboratory. Do not use laboratory glassware as containers for food or beverages.
Rule #7 Never fool around in the laboratory. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited.
Rule #8 Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all times.
Rule #9 Be alert and proceed with caution at all time. If you see something unsafe… Tell the teacher!
Rule #10 Wash your hands with soap and water after performing all experiments. Keep them out of your eyes and mouth!
Pay attention to what is going on. Keep an eye on your experiments! Do not wander around the room. Rule #11
Where you at? ! Rule #12 Know the location of: 1. first aid kit(s) 2. Fire extinguisher. 3. Exits.
Rule #13 Know what to do if there is a fire drill during a lab. Turn off. Get out.
Rule #14 Any time chemicals, heat, or glassware used, students will wear safety goggles.
Rule #15 1. Dress properly during a laboratory activity. 2. Long hair must be tied back, and dangling jewelry and baggy clothing must be secured. 3. No sandals allowed on lab days.
Rule #16 Report any accident or injury to the teacher immediately. Do not panic.
Rule #17 If you or your lab partner is hurt, immediately (and loudly) get the teacher's attention. Do not panic.
Rule #18 If a chemical should splash in your eye(s) or on your skin, immediately flush with running water for at least 20 minutes.
Rule #19 Never handle broken glass with your bare hands.
Rule #20 Examine glassware before each use. Never use chipped, cracked, or dirty glassware.
Rule #21 If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment, ASK THE TEACHER FOR HELP!
Rule #22 Do not put hot glassware in cold water. The glassware may shatter.
Rule #23 Use of hot plate is only allowed in the presence of the teacher.
Let’s avoid this.
Rule #24 Heated glassware stays hot! Set it aside to cool. Use tongs or protective gloves if necessary.
Rule #25 Never look into a container that is being heated.
Rule #26 Do not place hot stuff on the table. Ever.
Rule #27 Always THINK before you do something!
