Laboratory Safety Mr. Pollack – 8 th grade science
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LAB SAFETY? • Review the Lab Safety Contract • Return one copy signed by a parent. • Keep a second copy in your notebook for reference. • No one will be permitted to participate in the lab until the Safety Contract is turned in. • Lab safety rules must be obeyed at all times or you will be removed from the laboratory classroom. • Successful completion of laboratory work is part of your grade, so it is essential that you to follow lab safety rules.
FIRST THINGS FIRST • Before the day of lab, review all procedures that you will be performing (I will provide these in advance). • Ask questions if you are uncertain about any procedures before you do anything. • Do not touch anything when entering the lab until instructed to do so. • Stay in your designated lab bench area and do not leave (to get supplies, etc. ) until instructed to do so.
FIRST THINGS FIRST • No eating, drinking or chewing gum in the laboratory. • Keep your bench area clean at all times. Only have out any instructions or items needed for the lab. • Keep aisles clear. Store books and other items in the classroom area. • Wandering around the room and horseplay are not permitted in lab. • Never work alone. No lab work is to be carried out without the teacher being present.
CHEMICAL SAFETY • Read labels! All chemicals are to be considered dangerous. • Do not touch, taste or smell any chemicals unless directed to do so. • Keep your hands away from face, eyes mouth and body while using chemicals or preserved specimens. • Never transfer liquids / pipette by mouth. • Never return unused chemicals to their original containers.
CHEMICAL SAFETY Wear protective clothing provided when handling chemicals. • gloves • goggles • apron / lab coat http: //img 117. imageshack. us/i/hazardousnx 2. jpg/
CHEMICAL SAFETY • When working with chemicals, and at any other time, as instructed by the teacher, you must wear your goggles. • Failure to follow this rule will result in ejection from the lab and a phone call to parents.
PROPER USE OF GOGGLES IN THE LAB IS ESSENTIAL http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=h. Ko. B 0 MHVBv. M
CHEMICAL SAFETY • Dispose of chemical waste properly. • Never mix chemicals in sink drains or dispose of chemicals or solutions in sinks unless you are instructed to do so. • Dispose of waste in proper waste containers as directed by the teacher.
CLEAN UP • Clean and put away all equipment when you are finished using it. • Wash your hands with soap and water after performing all experiments. • Wipe off your lab bench using spray cleaner and paper towels.
CLEAN UP • Report any accident (spill, breakage, injury) to the teacher immediately, no matter how trivial it may appear. • Clean up and dispose of broken glass using a broom and dustpan and place waste in designated glass waste container.
