LABORATORY SAFETY • Guidelines for a safe and enjoyable lab experience.
GENERAL GUIDELINES • Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. • No eating or drinking. • Do not touch equipment or materials until instructed. • Perform only experiments authorized by teacher.
GENERAL GUIDELINES • Be prepared for work, no horseplay. • Observe good housekeeping practices. • Keep aisles clear. • Know locations of safety equipment.
GENERAL GUIDELINES • Dispose of all chemical waste properly. • Wash hands after experimentation. • Stay at your lab station at all times.
CLOTHING • Wear lab goggles at all times. • Dress properly – tie long hair back. • Lab aprons should be worn during laboratory activities
ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES • Report all accidents immediately to teacher no matter how trivial it may appear.
HANDLING CHEMICALS • All chemicals in the lab are to be considered dangerous. • Smell using the wafting motion. • Never return unused chemicals to their original containers
HANDLING CHEMICALS • Never discard any chemicals down the sink. • Acids must be handled with extreme care. • Dilute acids by adding the acid to water.
HANDLING GLASS AND EQUIPMENT • Never hold broken glass with your bare hands. • Grasp plug, not cord, when removing cord from outlet. • Never use chipped or cracked glassware. • Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water.
HEATING SUBSTANCES • Never leave a lit burner unattended. • Do not point the open end of a test tube that has been heated at you or anyone else. • Never look into a container that is being heated.
