Laboratory Report Notes This is the format for writing formal lab reports. You are expected to know and use this design when writing your lab reports. It is essential that you understand the logical sequence of ideas in the report.
Title • This is a precise and concise statement of the purpose, problem or question. • Examples from actual Journal articles: – Too Much of a Good Thing? Emotional Intelligence and Interpersonal Conflict Behaviors (Journal of Social Psychology) – Study of Nonlinear Waves in Astrophysical Quantum Plasmas (Astrophysics and Space Science – The Ultraviolet sky surveys: filling the gap in our view of the Universe (Astrophysics and Space Science – Real-Time Strategy Video Game Experience and Visual Perceptual Learning (Journal of Neuroscience) – Induction of Interleukin-1β by Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 Viral Proteins Leads to Increased Levels of Neuronal Ferritin Heavy Chain, Synaptic Injury, and Deficits in Flexible Attention (Journal of Neuroscience)
Introduction • This is a statement of the objectives or a hypothesis may be necessary if the title does not fully describe the problem being studied. • The hypothesis is a prediction (not a guess, educated or otherwise)of what you think will happen during the investigation. • It should be supported by previously developed concepts (i. e. research of other experiments and research)
Materials • This is a list of ALL materials used to conduct the investigation • This would include but not limited to measuring devices, containers, chemicals etc.
Procedures • This is a DETAILED, step by step explanation of how to conduct the investigation. • The procedures should be written to enable someone to replicate your investigation.
Data and Observations • Qualitative and Quantitative • This section contains the facts • Quantitative Data – These are facts gathered with measuring devices and calculations. – Data should be well organized and put in a table when possible. • Qualitative Data – These are facts gathered with the senses. – May be the only data possible to obtain – Or used to support the Quantitative data • Graphs should be placed following the data table
Analysis and Results • Minimum of 3 paragraphs explaining the facts – First paragraph states the purpose and procedures – Second paragraph presents all of the facts in the order they were obtained – Third paragraph contains the interpretation of the facts as they relate to the purpose. Should be written in a logical manner that leads to your conclusion.
Conclusion • A brief statement that is your answer (opinion) to the problem based on your interpretation of the facts as they relate to the purpose.
