Abstract • Two previously-unobserved emission continua, peaking at ∼ 380 nm and ∼ 273 nm, have been observed when Hg vapor is photoexcited at 248 nm (Kr. F laser). • Comparisons of the observed spectra with theory[1] suggest that the observed continua are the result of transitions between pairs of electronic states having a triangular (C 2 v) configuration. Conclusions • New emission transition continuum bands centered at ∼ 380 nm and ∼ 273 nm were observed for the first time when Hg vapor is photoexcited at 248 nm. • Comparisons with theoretical predictions suggest these continua are unobserved Hg 3 bands.
