The µ-RWELL architecture The µ-RWELL detector is composed by two elements: the cathode and the µ-RWELL_PCB. Drift/cathode PCB The µ-RWELL_PCB is realized by coupling: 1. a “suitable WELL patterned kapton foil as “amplification stage” Well pitch: 140 µm Well diameter: 70 -50 µm Kapton thickness: 50 µm Copper top layer (5µm) 2. a “resistive stage” for the discharge DLC layer (0. 1 -0. 2 µm) R 50 -100 MΩ/□ suppression & current evacuation i. “Low particle rate” (LR) < 100 k. Hz/cm 2: single resistive layer surface resistivity ~100 M / (CMS-phase 2 upgrade - SHIP) 1 2 3 Rigid PCB readout electrode ii. “High particle rate” (HR) > 1 MHz/cm 2: more sophisticated resistive scheme must be implemented (MPDG_NEXT- LNF & LHCbmuon upgrade) µ-RWELL PCB G. STUDI DIPENDENZA DELLE PERFORMANCE DEL DETECTOR DAL PIANO RESISTIVO CON PROTOTIPI SINGLE –RESISTIVE-LAYER (LOW RATE APPLICATIONS PUBBLICAZIONE PRONTA PER ESSERE SOTTOMESSA). 2. TEST DI DEPOSIZIONE PER SPUTTERING DI DLC EFFETTUATI CON SUCCESSO PRESSO «Be-sputter» IN GIAPPONE (A. OCHI) ANCHE SE SI VORREBBE CERCARE UNA SOLUZIONE EUROPEA SE NON ITALIANA (CONTATTI IN CORSO – vedi richiesta supporto) 3. REALIZZAZIONE DELLA VERSIONE DEL RIVELATORE AD ALTA RATE, BASATA SU SCHEMA A DOPPIO LAYER RESISTIVO CON «CONDUCTIVE VIAS» DI CONNESSIONE TRA I DUE LAYERS: PROTOTIPI REALIZZATI CON READOUT A STRIP (400 um STRIP-PITCH), TEST CARATTERIZZAZIONE IN LAB COMPLETATI (pubblicazione in preparazione milestone – 100%) 4. GATTA) PER PROGETTAZIONE CIRCUITI R/OUT DEL RIVELATORE.

2. DLC - sputtering DLC sputtering on Kapton foils (w/copper on one side) performed @ Be-Sputter Co. , Ltd (Japan) – VARI TEST EFFETTUATI PER CALIBRARE IL PROCESSO IN FUNZIONE DELLO SPESSORE DELLA DEPOSIZIONE DI DLC (DIAMOND LIKE CARBON) Average Surface Resistivity M / Foil 1 (800 A) Foil 2 (1300 A) Foil 3 (1800 A) Foil 4 (1500 A) Foil 5 (1500 A) 433± 90 68± 9 41± 12 122± 22 180± 17 Ar/ISO=90/10 5 5

WELL amplification stage, on 1 st DLC layer Pubblicazione in preparation 2 nd resistive kapton layer “through vias” for grounding Φ = 3. 4 MHz/cm 2 Φ = 2. 8 MHz/cm 2 Φ = 1. 6 MHz/cm 2 For double layer la “local irradiation” is practically equivalent to global irradiation 6

4. Test beam – 2016: risoluzione temporale H 8 Beam Area (18 th Oct. – 9 th Nov 2016) Muon/Pion beam: 150 Ge. V/c 3 -RWELL prototypes 40 -35 -70 MΩ /□ VFAT (digital FEE) Ar/CO 2/CF 4 = 45/15/40 Pubblicazione in preparazione 97% 5. 7 ns The saturation at 5. 7 ns is dominated by the fee (measurement done with VFAT 2). The measurement will be re-done asap with VTX chip (we expect to achieve 4 -4, 5 7 ns)
