Strike • Work Stoppage – A group’s refusal to work in protest against low pay or bad work conditions
Injunction • To order back to work • Usually a President orders an injunction if the good of the nation is effected
National Labor Union (NLU) • Legalized 8 -hour work day for government workers
Knights of Labor • 8 -hour workday for all workers • Equal pay for men and women • Did not discriminate against race, gender, or degree of skill
American Federation of Labor • Led by Samuel Gompers • Include skilled workers from more than one trade • Used strikes as a major tactic (higher wages and shorter workweek)
American Railway Union • Took all of those involved with the railroad trade
Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) or Wobblies • A group of radical men/women • They want to change capitalism to socialism • Not very successful but did give dignity to unions
International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) • Won labor agreements and better working conditions • Fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory led people to ignore such conditions
