Lab Safety What is lab safety?
With all emergencies, you must tell the teacher
Rule One NO eating, drinking, or chewing gum in the classroom.
Rule Two NO running or playing around.
Rule Three Do NOT touch or use lab materials until told to do so
Rule Four Actively LISTEN to all directions. FOLLOW all directions. ASK QUESTIONS if you are not sure.
Rule Five During labs: -Make sure clothing and hair are secured. -Wear closed-toed shoes.
Rule Six Wear goggles and lab aprons when required.
Rule Seven Stay within your lab group’s area. Keep area free of clutter.
Rule Eight Use the equipment with care.
Rule Nine Spills are to be dealt with IMMEDIATELY.
Rule Ten Clean your lab area once the lab is complete. Your lab group will NOT be able to leave until you have done so.
Safety Equipment
Fire Extinguisher • Located just inside the storage closet. • Only used by teacher unless directed otherwise. • NOT used on people, just objects. (Pull pin, direct hose, shoot at base of flames. )
Fire Blanket • Located just inside the storage closet. • Only used by teacher unless directed otherwise. • This is what is used on people on fire. (Stop, drop, & roll while we smother flames. )
Safety Shower • In back of classroom. • Only used when teacher says so… which should be NEVER. • Used only when person is fully engulfed and blanket didn’t help or if covered in certain chemicals. • Pulling for “fun” = expulsion potential
Eyewash Station • Tell teacher immediately! • Takes 2 people in addition to the injured person. ■ One to hold their eyes open. ■ One to operate the faucet and hold their head down in the water. • Eyes in cold water for 15 minutes straight. (They’ll likely go numb. )
