Lab Safety th 5 Grade Safety Rules & Guidelines
General Guidelines • Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. • Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. • Never work alone in the lab. • No Student may work in the lab without the presence of a teacher.
Ask Your Teacher!!! • If you don’t understand a direction or part of a procedure always ask your teacher before proceeding with the activity!
Do Not Touch – Do not touch any equipment – Do not touch any chemicals – Do not touch any materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so
Clear The Area • • • Purses Books Jackets Food Etc.
DANGER!!! • • Never fool around in a science lab No Horseplay No Practical Jokes No Pranks
HELP! • Notify the teacher immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe!
Clothing • • • Goggles Gloves Lab Coat Apron Shoes
Clothing • Any time chemicals, heat, or glassware used, students will wear safety goggles. • No Exceptions To This Rule!!! • Dress properly during a lab experiment. • Long hair, dangling jewelry, and baggy clothing are hazards.
Clothing • • Hair must be tied back Loose or baggy clothing must be secured Shoes must completely cover the foot. No sandals will be allowed in the lab on specific days. • Wear your P. E. shoes in the lab.
Accidents and Injury • No Eating or Drinking during a Lab • Keep your hands away from your face, eyes, mouth, and body while using chemicals. • Always wash your hands after science lab.
Tell the Teacher • Report Immediately Any: – Accidents – Spills – Breakage – Cuts – Burns – Injury – Etc.
Equipment • Know the location of: – First-aid kit – Fire extinguisher • Pull • Point • press – Nearest Fire alarm – Nearest exits
Can You Handle It? • Never return used chemicals to their original containers. • Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. • Ask the teacher if you don’t know how to use equipment. • Don’t put hot glass in cold water! • Always Waft
What’s Wafting? • When smelling chemicals or fumes, wave from the container toward your face. • This is called wafting. • Never take deep breathes of fumes or chemicals.
Clean Up • Follow your teacher’s instructions on how to dispose of chemicals. • Wash all glassware and tables. • Put up all equipment before removing goggles and aprons. • Only one person can be away from the table at a time. • This will reduce or prevent collisions or accidents. • Remain seated until the teacher instructs you to leave. • Place aprons and goggles in the instructed areas.
Follow these Rules or Else! • If you are unable to follow the lab rules you will be asked politely to leave. • Let’s make this year GREAT!!!
