Lab Safety Lab Equipment and Safety Rules

Chem Catalyst • List or draw at least two tools or pieces of equipment you think a chemist might use often in a chemistry experiment.

Test Tube Rack • keeps test tube upright

Test tube • mix small amounts of chemicals; may be heated if made of Pyrex glass.

Test Tube Holder • hold test tube while heating

Test Tube Brush • cleans test tube

Thermometer • measuring temperature

Graduated Cylinder • used to measure liquid volume – Place cylinder on flat surface – View at eye level – read bottom of the meniscus (curved line)

Balance / Scale • used to measure mass

Bunsen Burner • source of heat

Striker • used to ignite gas in Bunsen Burner

Ring Stand • support for other equipment

Wire Gauze • supporting beakers when heated • helps to spread flame

Iron Ring • Supports other equipment on ring stand

Clamp • Supports test tube in place on ring stand

Pipestem Triangle • Supporting other equipment in place

Tongs • holding glassware when hot

Watch Glass • used to hold substances for observation and is sometimes used for evaporating to dryness

Well Plate Used for observing the mixing of small amounts of chemicals.

Evaporating Dish Used for heating liquids, usually to evaporate a solvent.

Petri Dish • used to hold and observe materials

Safety Glasses Used to protect eyes when not using chemicals.

Safety Goggles Used to protect eyes against chemical splashes.

Lab Apron Used for protecting body from chemical splashes and fire.

Mortar and Pestle • used to grind solids

Forceps • for picking up small items to relocate

Spatula • scoop up chemicals and transfer to another container

Formative Assessment #1 • Write your full last name and nickname on the blank side of your index card. Put the date and your period below your name. • Turn your card over to the lined side of your card. • Without looking at your handout, list 3 pieces of equipment you think are important to chemistry and describe their use.

Beaker • used to transfer liquids. • May be heated – if made of Pyrex or Kimax glass.

Dropper / Pipet • used to add (transfer) liquids one drop at a time.

Funnel • Helps transfer liquids

Distilled Water Bottle • for transfering distilled water ONLY

Florence Flask • Used to mix solutions • Not graduated can’t measure with • Rounded bottom

Stirring Rod • Used to stir liquids

Erlenmeyer Flask • used to mix solutions

Lab Safety Rules

1. The teacher must be present to work in the lab. Get Ready…. . GO!

2. Everyone must work with a partner at the assigned table. No groups larger than 4 students.

3. Read all the instructions and ask questions before conducting the lab.

4. No unauthorized experiments are permitted. Failure to follow the procedure will result in removal from the lab

5. No horseplay or foolish behavior is allowed. Failure to follow this rule will result in removal from the lab.

6. Wear proper lab equipment provided for the lab.

• Goggles used when heating or reacting chemicals. • Glasses are for small scale labs • Lab aprons are always worn to protect skin and clothing. • Gloves used only as needed.

7. Roll up long sleeves or remove bulky sweatshirts or jackets. Remove long dangly jewelry or other accessories that can get in the way.

8. Tie back long hair in a pony tail.

9. Know the location and use of all safety equipment

• Fire Extinguisher used only on surface fires – NOT on people • Fire Blankets used to wrap someone who is on fire

• Eye Wash Station must rinse eyes for 15 minutes to completely flush chemicals • Safety Shower / Drench must remove clothes and rinse body for 15 minutes – for full body spills

• Fume Hood removes poisonous or noxious gases from room

• Goggle Sanitizer cleans goggles before or after use

10. Report minor injuries like cuts and burns. • Cuts should be cleaned and bandaged. • Burns should be treated with cold water, then Water. Gel.

11. If something gets in your eyes, rinse for 15 minutes in eye wash.

12. If there is a fire alert neighbors extinguish immediately with appropriate fire extinguisher If fire is too big EXIT the room!!!

13. If person is on fire lab partner gets the fire blanket and pats the fire out. Be sure to STOP, DROP, and ROLL!

14. Clean up acid spills with a base. Clean up base spills with an acid.

15. Rinse acid or base from skin immediately. If spill is all over body, then remove clothes and use the safety shower for 15 minutes.

16. • Broken glass must be swept up and placed in specially marked boxes. NOT in the trash! • Clean up spills immediately!

17. Do not eat or drink in the lab or put things in your mouth. Never taste the chemicals.

18. Avoid clutter and keep table clean

19. ALWAYS read the label twice and check for warnings or hazards.

20. Always waft to check the odor.

21. Use the back of the hand to test for heat. Use tongs to pick up or heat items.

22. When mixing acid and water, DO AS YOU OTTER, ADD ACID TO THE WATER!

23. Use the fume hood for poisonous gases.

24. Never used chipped or cracked glassware Heat only Pyrex or Kimax glassware

25. • Heat a test tube on an angle, but be sure to not point it at anyone • Use a test tube holder • Move the test tube back and forth through the flame.

26. Never leave anything being heated or visibly reacting

27. Always turn off burner when not in use Think Like a LOSER!

28. At the end of lab…. Never return chemicals to original container

29. Always follow teacher’s directions for disposal of chemicals. Do not pour liquids down the drain unless instructed to do so. All solids must be disposed of in the trash or special waste containers

30. Always wash your hands before leaving the lab

31. If in doubt…. always ASK!!!
