Rule # 1 Conduct yourself in a responsible manner in the Chemistry classroom.
Rule # 2 Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Don't be afraid to ask.
Rule # 3 Never work alone. Never work in lab with out the teacher present.
Rule # 4 When entering the science classroom, do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the lab until instructed to do so.
Rule # 5 Do not eat or drink in the lab.
Rule # 6 Point test tubes away from all people when heating.
Rule # 7 Never fool around in the laboratory. Read all procedures before entering the lab.
Rule # 8 Observe good housekeeping practices. Clean up after yourself.
Rule # 9 Be aware of safety equipment and how to use it.
Safety Equipment
Rule # 10 Dispose of all chemical waste properly. • Never mix chemicals in the sink. • Solids should be disposed of in the proper containers. • Hazardous wastes will have their own special disposal procedures.
Rule # 11 Never look into a container that is being heated.
Rule # 12 If you have any special medical conditions, please notify the teacher, prior to lab.
Rule # 13 Students will wear Lab goggles any time heat, glassware, or chemicals are in use.
Rule # 14 Dress properly in lab. 1. No baggy (saggy) clothes. 2. Tie your long hair back. 3. Wear closed-toed shoes on lab day.
Rule # 15 Wear an apron when using corrosive chemicals.
Rule # 16 Notify teacher of any accident (spill, breakage, injury) no matter how “small” it seems.
Rule # 17 If you splash a chemical on you (or in you) immediately wash for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Handling Chemicals 1. All chemicals are considered dangerous. Do not touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless told. 2. Check the labels on chemicals twice before using them. 3. Never return unused chemicals to their original containers.
Rule # 18 Handle Acids with extreme caution. To dilute an acid, always pour acid into water!
Rule # 19 Examine glassware BEFORE each use. Never use chipped or broken glassware.
Rule # 20 Do not use cracked glassware. Throw it away properly (in the glass disposal box).
Rule # 21 Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water, it may break.
Rule # 22 Exercise extreme caution when using a gas burner.
Rule # 23 Do not leave a lit burner unattended.
