Lab Report Brief Descriptions
Objective States the purpose of the lab –Why the lab is being performed
Introduction Briefly discuss the concepts or principles of the Lab. • What Scientific Principle (Law) will be tested. • What Scientific relationship will be shown. The Hypothesis should be presented here or as the objective if applicable. • Hypothesis should include any relationship between variable, should mention independent variable vs dependent variable. Background knowledge should be presented here, evidence of further research into topic should be done here if applicable
Methods & Procedure Describe in enough detail, using numbered steps, the methods and procedures used in completing the lab. It should be comprehensive enough for someone to repeat your procedures. • Special attention should be paid to how the independent and dependent variable were obtained and recorded, and if there any constants. • The treatment of control should be mentioned. This treatment of a control should also be mentioned. This section should NOT contain any recorded results or data from the lab.
Results This is where all gathered data is relayed to the reader. It should be presented in a clear manner and explained if necessary. • Tables should be used and these should mirror the relationship between the variables. (typically independent on the left in increasing order) • Graphs should also be as detailed, with the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent on the y-axis. Any calculations should be shown her as well. These should also be presented clearly and explained. • The source of all numbers used in calculations should be given
Discussion The data, results and procedures will be discussed here. Explain the relationship of the variables as presented by the data. Explain any trends in the data that will be used. You should present the evidence that will support your conclusion. Percent Error should also be included here as well as a possible source of error. Future treatments to reduce error can be discussed as well.
Conclusion States whether the results support you hypothesis, if not, or whether the Scientific Principle was demonstrated adequately or not.
Work Cited The report must be filled out on Science Web Page and then submitted when finished. Make sure all partners are included. • Works used as references must be cited**, this includes your textbook if used.
Tables Table title is above the table with caption. • Should include independent and dependent variables Column headings indicate what is measured. Column headings indicate units of measurement. Independent variables is in increasing order in left hand column.
Graphs A brief statement of figure explanation is below the graph. Title includes independent and dependent variable. Independent variable is on the horizontal axis and labeled including units of measurement. Dependent variable is on the vertical axis and is labeled including units of measurement. Legend indicated meaning (if more than one line in a graph or bar graph) The appropriate graph(s) were constructed. * Equation is present if appropriate
