Striker ignite a Bunsen burner
Utility clamp To secure lab equipment to the ring stand
Thermometer Measure temperature
Hotplate Heating chemicals without using an open flame
Heating with burner 1. Flame should be 2 -3 inches high, blue with a lighter blue inner cone 2. Tip of flame should be 1 -2 inches below wire gauze 3. 2 nd iron ring to stabilize beakers
Water bath 1. Heats the test tube evenly 2. Can be done with hotplate or burner 3. Water level in beaker should be higher than the water level in test tube 4. Utility clamp used to stabilize test tube
Cooling hot equipment 1. Hot glass – use insulating pad and leave on lab bench until it is cool enough to touch, then run it under warm water, wipe dry with paper towel 2. Hot metal – pick up cool part and run hot part under cool water, wipe dry with paper towel
