Lab Equipment & Measurement Tools for Science

The Metric System • Used by scientists all over the world! • The Metric System is known as the International System of Units or (SI) • It is based on powers on ten.

Triple Beam Balance • Used to find mass (amount of matter in an object) • Measured in grams (g)

Triple Beam Balance • How to Use: • Place object on metal pan • Move all slides to zero • Slowly move slides until arrow is even with line *Start with the largest • Add all measurements together to get the total mass in grams ▫ Ex: 200 g + 70 g +6. 5 g = 276. 5 grams

Electronic Balance • Also used to find the mass of an object in grams.

Electronic Balance • How to Use: • Turn on • Wait until the balance reads O grams • Place object on balance & record mass ▫ Ex: 2. 7 grams

Review • What unit is used in science to measure mass? a. b. c. d. pounds ounces grams inches

Meter Stick • Used to measure length, width, or height in meters (m)

Metric Ruler • Used to measure length, width, or height of an object • Measures using centimeters (cm)

Metric Ruler • How to Use: • Find the side that reads in centimeters (cm) • Line object up at the O cm mark • Each numbered line = 1 cm • Each small line in between = 1 mm • Record length to nearest mm

Metric Ruler ▫ Example: 1 cm + 5 mm = 1. 5 cm

Review • What unit is used in science to measure length? • • inches feet yards meters

Measuring Volume of a Cube • Rulers can also measure volume in centimeters cubed (cm 3) • Volume = Length x Width x Height ▫ Example: 5 cm x 5 cm = 125 cm 3

Graduated Cylinder • Used to measure the volume of liquids in milliliters (m. L) • Volume: the amount of space something takes up

Graduated Cylinder • How to Use • Pour liquid into cylinder • Find the meniscus • Record volume in m. L • Be sure to check the scale! ▫ Ex: 6. 8 m. L

Graduated Cylinder • Graduated Cylinders can also measure the volume of irregularly shaped objects in cm 3 • This is called water displacement • Example: ▫ starting volume = 20 m. L ▫ end volume = 23 m. L • Subtract end volume from start volume of water to find volume of object: ▫ 23 m. L water – 20 m. L water = 3 cm 3 rock

Review • What unit is used in science to measure volume? a. b. c. d. gram liter meter ounces

Density • The formula for density is = Mass/Volume (g/m. L) • D = m/v

Beaker • Used to mix or pour liquids • Measures volume in milliliters (m. L), but not as accurately as a graduated cylinder

Thermometer • Measures Temperature in degrees Celsius (˚C) ▫ O ˚C = freezing ▫ 25 ˚C = room temperature ▫ 100 ˚C = boiling

Probeware • Can be used to digitally collect data & graph results

Tongs Beaker Tongs Test Tube Tongs • Used to hold hot beakers • Used to hold hot test tubes

Test Tubes Test Tube Rack • Clear glass tubes used to mix or observe chemicals • Used to hold test tubes

Funnel • Used to transfer liquids without spilling

Flask Florence Flask Erlynmyer • Used to mix liquids by swirling • Rounded • Used to mix liquids by swirling • Triangular shape

Stirring Rod • Glass rod used to stir liquids

Pipette • Plastic dropper used to transfer or add small amounts of a liquid

Reagent Bottle • Glass bottle with dropper used to transfer liquids

Microscope • Used to magnify specimens

Review • What tool would you use to transfer a small drop of liquid? a. b. c. d. beaker graduated cylinder reagent bottle pipette

Microscope Slides Slide Cover Slips • Glass rectangle used to hold specimen under microscope • Clear plastic square placed over specimen to protect microscope lens

Dissecting Tools Scalpel Scissors • Used to cut like a razor • Also used to cut during dissections

Dissection Tools Forceps Dissecting Probe • Tweezers used to pull apart specimen • Used to move parts of specimen

Dissection Tools Dissecting Tray Dissecting Pins • Rubber lined metal tray used to hold specimen. • Sharp needles used to hold specimen to tray
