Lab Equipment Today • • • Beaker Graduated cylinder Stirring rod Erlenmeyer flask Test tube rack Thermometer Hot plate Electronic balance

Beaker • What it does: – Holds and measures large volumes of liquid – Good for stirring or heating the liquid • How to use it: – Fill to the proper volume – Always look at the bottom of the liquid’s curve (called the meniscus) to find the volume • Safety concerns: – Glass can break

Graduated Cylinder • What it does: – Measures liquid very precisely • How to use it: – Fill to the proper volume – Always look at the bottom of the liquid’s curve (called the meniscus) to find the volume • Safety concerns: – Glass can break

Stir Rod • What it does: – Stirs liquid • How to use it: – Gently stir the liquid in a beaker • Safety concerns: – Made of very thin glass, so it is easy to break

Flask • What it does: – Holds and measures large volumes of liquid – Good for swirling the liquid • How to use it: – Fill to the proper volume – Always look at the bottom of the liquid’s curve (called the meniscus) to find the volume • Safety concerns: – Glass can break

Test Tube • What it does: – Holds small amounts of liquid and other stuff • How to use it: – Measure the liquid with a pipette, then pour into the test tube • Safety concerns: – Glass can break

Test Tube Rack • What it does: – Holds test tubes upright • How to use it: – Put test tube in square opening • Safety concerns: – Keep it balanced (not too many test tubes on one side), otherwise it could tip over

Thermometer • What it does: – Measures the average kinetic energy of the molecules in the sample (tells how hot it is) • How to use it: – Read the degrees (º ) on the Celsius scale. Science uses the metric system! • Safety concerns: – Glass can break

Hot Plate • What it does: – Produces heat like a stove’s burner • How to use it: – Ms. Syiem will always set it up for you – Don’t adjust the temperature without asking permission • Safety concerns: – Never touch the hot plate – Don’t touch anything on it without hot mitts

Electronic Balance • What it does: – Measures the mass of an object • How to use it: – Place an object on the metal pan – Put substances into a weighing tray first (i. e. salt) • Safety concerns: – Do NOT press the pan – it is VERY sensitive and costs $$$ to fix

Safety Check: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Is your hair tied back? Do you have dangling jewelry or loose clothes? Are you wearing close-toed shoes? Do you have your goggles? Is your stuff stored in the cubbies?
