Lab Equipment 8 th Grade Science Mrs. Bendoraitis
#1 Graduated Cylinder To measure liquid volume
#2 Boiling Flask Used to boil a liquid Designed to help the liquid boil faster
#3 Beaker For holding or pouring liquids Frequently used in 8 th grade labs as I do not have 7 bottles of every chemical
#4 Petri Dish Used for growing bacteria Has a top and a bottom Shallow dishes made of glass
#5 Erlenmeyer Flask It is used to heat or store liquids Narrow opening can be plugged up by a stopper for temporary storage
#6 Evaporating Dish Used to heat a solid Has a spout for pouring
#7 Triple beam balance Used to measure mass Measured in grams
#8 Funnel Used to help pour a liquid into a cylinder or other container Used to prevent spills
#9 Test Tube Used for watching a reaction Holding liquids Can be plugged with a stopper
#10 Vial Container with a lid that seals Used for chemical storage Solids or liquids
#11 Test Tube Brush Used to clean a test tube
#12 Test tube rack Because test tubes have a round bottom they can not sit on their own A test tube rack is used to hold the test tube It is also used to help dry a test tube, because they can be flipped over
#13 Test tube tongs Used to help move a test tube that has been heated from one place to another Never touch hot glass!
#14 Cork stopper #15 Rubber Stopper Used to plug up a test tube, Erlenmeyer flask. To prevent gasses from escaping To prevent air from getting in
#16 Mortar and Pestle Used to crush up a solid into a powder
#17 Beaker tongs Used to move a beaker that has been heated from one place to another
#18 Tripod Stand Tri – means 3 A stand with three legs Used with a wire gauze (#24) to hold up an item that is going to be heated
#19 Ring stand Used for a lab set up Used with different clamps to help hold items in place during an experiment
#20 Ring Clamp Used with a ring stand a wire gauze to hold an item over a heat source
#21 Reagent Bottle Glass container used for permanent chemical storage
#22 Forceps They look like tweezers They are used to move a solid from the container to a test tube or beaker You don’t want to have to touch the solid chemical
#23 Pipet Used to add or take away a few drops of liquid Helps you get exact amounts of liquid in a graduated cylinder It is used to add drops to an experiment
#24 Wire Gauze Used flame with a ring clamp to hold an item over a
#25 Spark lighter Used to light a Bunsen Burner The spark lights the gas that is flowing through the Bunsen burner
#26 Burner hose This hose connects the Bunsen burner to the gas jet on the lab table
#27 Bunsen Burner This is where the flame comes from It can be adjusted to create a bigger or smaller flame
#28 Thermometer Clamp Used with a ring stand to hold a thermometer in place It is used to prevent thermometer from touching the bottom of the beaker
#29 test tube clamp This is used with a ring stand to hold a test tube in place. This is used to prevent the test tube from touching the bottom of the beaker
