Lab 08 Fish anatomy YOU WILL NEED Writing
Lab 08: Fish anatomy YOU WILL NEED: ● Writing utensil ● Your laptop (at your own peril!) ● Will provide white paper and color pencils
Today’s Lab: 1. Tour the UW Fish Collection and see a variety of fish species! 1. Learn about the internal and external anatomy of fishes 1. Experience dissecting a fish and see how different organs are laid out inside a fish 1. Work meticulously with a single fish to count and identify different structures 1. Discover that you can determine a lot about a fish by its body shape
How to memorize over 20, 000 fish species…? Do NOT memorize…READ them! Take clues from: • Body shape • Fish • Swimming behavior • Senses • Color/patterns • Etc.
Form and function
Species for today: 3. Petrale sole 1. Rabbit fish 4. Yellow croaker 2. Amberjack 5. Mackerel
External anatomy What will you do? • Morphometrics • Meristics • Draw the external structures External anatomy
Internal anatomy What will you do? • Isolate the gill arch and rakers • Carefully cut open the fish to expose gut and organs • Identify organs Internal anatomy • Draw the internal anatomy
Comparison between two groups: ► We will also have a demo at the back of the class later in lab demonstrating the differences in body type between a cartilaginous fish (dogfish shark Chondrichthyes) and your own bony fish. ► You will be responsible for indicating how two different organs or structures differ in function between the two groups of fish.
You are responsible for: 1. Two drawings (external and internal anatomy) – Figure 1 & 2 2. Table 1. Morphometrics 3. Table 2. Ratios 4. Table 3. Meristics 5. Note body shape for ALL fish examined in lab 6. Results summary 7. Discussion 8. Your synthesis: relate form and function fish vs. shark comparison
