Martinique has 386, 000 inhabitants It’s capital is Fort-de-France The highest point is Mt. Pelee, a volcano, at 1, 397 meters tall The only French speaking country in the Caribbean islands The Caribbean islands have a tropical climate, but the bottom half of Martinique is dry and the top is greener with rainforests and mountains It is one of the smallest regions of France at 436 sq. miles

History Martinique was sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1493, and was finally founded in 1502. It was originally named Madinina, which means “island of the flowers”. Spain hadn’t paid Much attention to the island, so colonization by other countries had just begun in 1635. The French made a settlement by promising the western half of Martinique to the Caribs. The French later proceeded by eliminating the Caribs from the island, making Martinique their territory. It became a French department in 1946 and an administrative department in 1974. In 1902, the eruption of Mt. Pelee destroyed the town of St. Pierre
Culture The atmosphere is usually relaxed and informal The majority of the population is Roman Catholic. Casual dress is acceptable everywhere, but formal attire is needed for dining out and nightclubs. They have many festivities such as; local fairs, or oxen pulling races
Culture The Schoelcher Library (Fort-de-France) was initially presented at the World Fair of 1889 in Paris, before being dismounted and being transported by boat to Fort-de-France. It currently has 130, 000 books The Saint-Louis Cathedral (Fort-de. France) was built in 1671 and had been destroyed many times after; set fire to by enemy soldiers, earthquakes, cyclones, etc.
Economy The Income is about 4000 USD per capita (person) Ever since Martinique was founded to about the 1900’s, Martinique had been famous for its sugar production, but since it has been going down lately, most of the economy depends on tourism Industries on the island include petroleum refining, sugar and rum production, and pineapple canning. Currency: Euro Is about 100 cents About 900, 000 people come to Martinique as tourists per year
