La Jetee
How the protagonist and other characters are established and developed • Characters are developed through use of close ups and still shots as they allow us to really connect with them because they are so close. • Due to the fact this short film is longer than most, it again allows us to connect with them more as we get to see more of them. • The narrative overview also signifies this because it means we get to hear about them as well rather than just see what they are doing.
How time and place are established and represented • One first thing that is said is ‘’before World War 3, which suggests that we are set in the future and that everything we are seeing s what one man thinks and is what a person thinks the world could look like in the future. • However, many other things we see suggest otherwise because the film has an old fashion sense to it and this is highlighted through the fact it is a black and white film.
The use of enigma, narrative crisis and resolution (or not). Explore the narrative structure. • We are wondering where about it is set, it could be right after World War 2 or 100 years after. • We wonder what is so important about these character relationships. • The time of the film suggest to us that certain event are repeated and that these particular things are causing it to repeat themselves.
An exploration of binary oppositions in the films • There is a difference between French culture and British culture in this short film. • Illusion of time vs morality and humanity • Reality vs Memories • One mans fate vs the future of the world
Identify and explore the messages and ideas of the film • What nature will look like in the future – creates peace and tranquility • We realise the man wasn’t in control of his life as he later relaise he saw his own death as a child but didn’t even realise i. His whole life was manipulated. • Themes of perception as well as memories and nostalgia. • Links ot the holocaust due to the conducting experements on three prisoners.
How does the film make you feel? What does it make you think about? • The film makes me feel unsure about what is happening as the only context or dialogue we get is from the narrator which is only from one persons point of view, so could be in fact a lie.
