1: La Casa en Mango Street • Describes how the family came to live on Mango Street. • Family had moved around a lot. • This is not the house of their dreams. • While the house is not what they wanted, it is THEIR house.

2: Pelos • Description of all of the different types of hair of all of the members of the family. • Esperanza’s hair doesn’t cooperate. • Her sister’s hair is smooth and oily. • Her mother’s hair is beautiful and smells like bread.

3: Niños y Niñas • Viven en mundos separados • Los hermanos hablan con las hermanas adentro de la casa pero no afuera de la casa. • Nenny es demasiada chica (joven) para tener la amiga de Esperanza. • Esperanza quiere una mejor amiga. Ahora, ella es como un globo rojo.

3: Boys and Girls • Boys and girls live in separate worlds. • Carlos and Kiki talk to Nenny and Esperanza inside of their home but not when they are outside. • Nenny is too young to be a friend to Esperanza. • Esperanza wants a best friend but doesn’t have one. She feels like a red balloon tied to an anchor.

4: Mi Nombre • • Esperanza es “hope” en inglés A ella no le gusta el nombre porque es muy largo. Era el nombre de su bisabuela. Las dos tienen cumpleaños durante el año del caballo (es mala suerte). • La bisabuela era salvaje hasta que el bisabuelo llegó. • Quiere un nombre como X o Zeze. Quiere un nombre más corto.

4: My name • Esperanza’s name means hope. To her, it means it’s too long, it’s sad, it’s waiting, it’s like the number 9 or the color of mud. • It was her great-grandmother’s name. She was a wild horse woman who ended up marrying her great-grandfather and sitting by the window her whole life. • Esperanza wants to be free, not sitting by the window.

4: My Name, contd. • She wishes she had a nickname like Nenny (Magdalena). • She wishes she could baptize herself under her own name like Zeze or X.

5: Cathy, Queen of Cats • Cathy is the great grand cousin of the queen of France • One day, her dad will need to fly to France to inherit the family house • Cathy lives upstairs, next to Joe, the baby grabber • Joe is dangerous • Benny and Blanca own the corner store

5: Cathy, Queen of Cats, contd. • Two raggedy girls live across the street • Edna owns the building next to you • Alicia has been stuck up ever since she went to college • Cathy is the queen of cats and has all types of cats • Cathy says that she’ll be Esperanza’s friend for a week

6: Our Good Day • 2 girls need $5. 00 to buy a bike that Tito is selling for $15. 00 total • Cathy tells Esperanza not to give them the money • Esperanza gives them $5. 00 and she now has two new friends and a bike • The girls are two sisters, Lucy and Rachel • They ride their new bike down Mango Street • The girls are from Texas

7: Risa • La risa = laughter • Nenny y Esperanza no se parecen similares como Rachel y Lucy • Pero, ellas tienen cosas parecidas a veces • Su risa es parecida, como los platos fuertes • También, ellas piensan que una casa que ellas pasan es como una casa mexciana

7: Laughter • Nenny and Esperanza don’t look alike Rachel and Lucy do • They do have similar elements, though • They both laugh loudly, like broken plates • They both think that a house that they pass by looks like a Mexican house

8: Gil • • Gil tiene una tienda con muchos productos Es un hombre viejo y negro �� No habla mucho La tienda tiene muchos productos y es difícil para andar por la tienda • Nenny y Gil hablan de una caja de madera • No puede comprar la caja

8: Gil’s Furniture, Bought and Sold • Gil owns a junk store with many products • It is difficult to walk in the store because it has so much stuff • Gil is African-American and he doesn’t really talk • Nenny gets Gil to talk to her about an old, wooden box • The box is not for sale

9: Meme Ortiz • Meme Ortiz trasladó a casa de Cathy cuando su familia se cambió • Su nombre verdadero es Juan • Tiene un perro de ojos grises, un pastor con dos nombres, uno en inglés y uno en español • El perro es grande, como su dueño

9: Meme Ortiz • Meme Ortiz moved into Cathy’s house after she moved away. • His real name is Juan. • He has a dog with gray eyes, a sheepdog with 2 names, 1 in English & 1 in Spanish. • The dog is big, like Meme. • Cathy’s father built the house where Meme lives.

9: Meme Ortiz, contd. • The house has slanted rooms and no closets. • There is a huge tree out back with fat arms. • The tree was chosen for the 1 st Annual Tarzan Jumping Contest which Meme won. • He broke both arms.

10: Louie, su prima y su primo • La familia de Louie vive abajo de la casa de Meme en un sótano. • Louie es el mayor de una familia de hermanitas. • Louie es el amigo de el hermano de Esperanza. • La prima de Louie vive allí. Ella es de Puerto Rico. Se llama Marín/Marís. • Lleva medias oscuras y compra Avon.

10: Louie, contd. • La prima canta mucho. • El otro primo tiene un Cadillac amarillo con alfombras blancas y asientos de piel blanca. • La séptima vez que ellos montan en el carro, oyeron las sirenas. • El primo fue arrestado.

10: Louie, his cousin & his other cousin • Louie’s family lives in a basement below Meme’s family • Louie is the oldest • He is a friend to Esperanza’s brother • Louie’s female cousin lives there. She is from Puerto Rico. Her name is Marín or Marís. • She dresses strange and sells Avon.

Louie, contd. • Louie’s male cousin drives a yellow Cadillac with white interior. • The neighborhood kids ride in the car. • On their seventh ride in the car, the cousin is arrested.

11: Marin • • • Marin tiene un novio quien vive en P. R. Ella va a casarse cuando ella vuelve a P. R. Ella tiene mucho dinero de su trabajo de Avon Ella quiere un trabajo en el centro de la ciudad El próximo año, Marin vivirá con su madre porque ella es un problema

11: Marin, contd. • • A Esperanza le gusta a Marin fuma Marin baila por la noche en las calles Ella quiere ser una estrella

11: Marin • Marin is going to go back to Puerto Rico to marry her boyfriend • She has saved a lot of money from selling Avon • Next year, her family will send her back to her mother with a letter saying that she is a problem • Esperanza likes Marin and what she has taught her about life & love

11: Marin • At night, Marin smokes outside • She dances in the moonlight and waits for someone to pass by, changing her life

12: Los Que No • Algunas personas tienen miedo del barrio de Esperanza • Ellos piensan que los vecinos tienen cuchillos brillantes • Esperanza dice que sus vecinos son seguros • Esperanza tiene miedo de otros barrios, con personas de otros colores

12: Those Who Don’t • Those who don’t know about Esperanza; s neighborhood are scared of it. They think that people there have shiny knives. • Esperanza says that her neighborhood is safe, but that she is scared when she goes to other neighborhoods, with people of other colors.

13: There Was an Old Woman…. • Rose Vargas has way too many kids. She is a single mother with no money. • Her kids are bad and they get into trouble. • They climb onto Mr. Benny’s roof and play chicken. He tells them to come down. • They are so bad that people eventually stop noticing when they get into trouble. • Three kids are Angel, Refugia, & Efren

14: Alicia que ve ratones • La madre de Alicia murió • Ella necesita despertarse temprano y preparar las tortillas • Ella es joven e inteligente y estudia por la primera vez a la universidad • Ella toma dos trenes y una guagua para llegar a la escuela • Estudia por toda la noche • Tiene miedo de ratones y su padre

14: Alicia who sees mice • Alicia rises very early to make the lunch tortillas and to take 2 trains and a bus to school • Her mother is dead • She is young and smart and is attending the university • She doesn’t want to spend her life in a factory or behind a rolling pin • She fears mice and her father

15: Darius y las nubes • Nunca acabas de llenarte de cielo • No hay muchas mariposas ni flores ni cielo, pero los vecinos dan gracias por lo que tienen • A Darius no le gusta la escuela. Es estúpido y no habla mucho. • Hoy, él señaló al cielo porque el mundo está lleno de nubes, de las parecen almohadas.

15: Darius and the clouds • The people of Mango Street don’t have enough beauty in their lives. They don’t have enough clouds, sky, butterflies, or flowers. • They are thankful for the times that they do have these things. • Darius doesn’t like school. He is stupid but says something wise today.

15: Darius and the clouds • Today he says that the clouds take on different forms, like pillows or popcorn. • Darius says that God made the clouds and that he made them simply.

16: Y algunas más • Los esquimales tienen 30 nombres diferentes para la nieve • Rachel tiene una prima con 3 nombres diferentes • Lucy dice que hay 2 tipos de la nieve – nieve limpia y sucia • Nenny dice que hay muchísimos tipos de nieve

16: Y algunas más • Hay más de diez nombres para las nubes • Algunas nubes son como la crema de afeitar o del pelo peinado o de campos de ovejas o de tu cara cuando te duermes • La cara de Esperanza es gorda y fea • Lucy dice que la madre de Esperanza es fea. • Esperanza dice, “Vayan Uds” a Lucy y Rachel.

16: Y algunas más • Hay treinta palabras de los esquimales para Rachel • Nenny no puede hablar con Lucy y Rachel si ella quiere ser la hermana de Esperanza • Las tres chicas gritan muchos nombres inapropriados

16: And some more • This chapter is all about names. • The Eskimos have 30 different names for snow. There are 10 names for clouds. • People can have multiple names. • Rachel and Lucy get mad at Esperanza and begin to call her names and insult both her and her mother. • Nenny can’t talk to Rachel & Lucy if she wants to be Esperanza’s sister.
