Date inputs – the Ethiopian Date Widget Sadly, in Web Apps / App Preview, it only shows the Gregorian calendar. So you might have to use an external reference table or converter when testing. 6

Calculating the Ethiopian date for display and saving to the case What’s the calculation? Use the format-date-for-calendar() function: dob_eth = format-date-for-calendar(/data/dob, 'ethiopian', '%Y-%m-%d') ØDanger! Do not use the function without the formatting argument! This changes based on locale of phone because the month is displayed in text (not numeric)! Danger! dob_eth = format-date-for-calendar(/data/dob, 'ethiopian') 7

Why does Ethiopia have different times? § Many countries near the equator (at least in East Africa!) measure time from sunrise and sunset. This makes a lot of sense because they are easy to identify by eye and happen at the same time every day! § People living far from the equator can’t do that. The sun doesn’t rise and set at the same time every day. So we instead measure from high noon, which is consistent each day. However, noon (and especially midnight) are harder to identify by eye than sunrise and sunset. 9

Ethiopian times and the L 10 K App § Times are used in the app for the first few PNC visits so we can tell how many hours post-delivery they occurred. § Times are asked for and displayed in Ethiopian time with a choice of an hour number and daytime/nighttime. We aren’t dealing with minutes. § Times are saved to the case as hours since the beginning of the day, with sunrise being 0 (so valid values are 0 -23). 11
