Introduction: � Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development; Govt. of India Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan is primer institution to provide education in India from 1965 with running more than 900 vidyalayas in all over the Indian states. And libraries are the key center of each Vidyalaya. KVS Libraries are delivering services to the academician, students and the staff. � In Information Communication & Technology (ICT) era, development of information technology is playing a crucial role in redesigning, restructuring and reengineering the shape of KVS Libraries. It is therefore essential for the KVS Librarians to know that the profession of Librarian is never static and would never be so in future. The library is an extremely important entity in the Vidyalaya and it must be responsive to Vidyalaya.
Concept of Digital Library: The Digital Libraries are electronic libraries where the information is acquired, stored and retrieved in digital form. � Digital Libraries are the group-interlinked workstations connected to the high-speed networks and can be accessible through networks/computers. � Internet Digital Library web Ø distributed environment for accessing the information Ø provides content delivery mechanism (TCP/IP and other protocols). Ø tools and techniques for the contents publishing, hosting and access the information Ø combination of structured/ unstructured text, number, data, scanned images, graphics, charts, audio and video recordings etc
Some definition of DL : � According to Lesk: -“A digital library is a collection of information that is both digitized and organized which offers capabilities beyond those of a traditional library” � According to a scholar: -“An organization, which might be virtual, that comprehensively collects, managers and preserves for the long term rich digital contents, and offers to its user communities specialized functionally on that contents, of measurable quality and according to codified policies. � According to the workshop on ‘Interoperability, Scaling and Digital Library Agenda: -“An organized collection of multimedia data with information 46 management methods that represent the data as information and knowledge”

Some Digital Library open source software : � Dspace : Dspace is an open source digital library software. Using the software, the digital libraries can be developed wherein digital documents can be uploaded and searched online. It conforms to the international standards including Dublin core and OAI-PMH. ( www. dspace. org ) � e. Print: The GNU e. Print free software, which create online achieve. The default configuration is the repository of research out put of an academic institution. It has been developed at the University of Southampton in relation to a variety of projects. � Greenstone: Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing digital library collections. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. Greenstone is produced at the University of Waikato, New Zealand developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO. It is a virtual solution that comprehensive stores, achieves and manages digital 50 content, and lets the user communities retrieve and access it, at the click of a button.
