KUS objectives BAT Use the rules of indices BAT Use the rules for Surds BAT understand line graphs Starter: Factorise Solve x 2 + 7 x + 12 = 0 x 2 + 8 x - 20 = 0 x 2 - 5 x + 6 = 0
Chapter 7: INDICES Examples Writing as powers of 5
Chapter 7: INDICES more complex powers Examples The reciprocal of one quarter is 4 2 to power 4 is 16, so 2 to power -4 is the reciprocal of 16 Numbers to power zero are all one Negative powers are reciprocals of the positive power The reciprocal of 5 is 1/5 3 to power of 2 is 9, so the reciprocal is 1/9 The reciprocal of four fifths is five quarters One quarter to power 2 is 1/16, so the reciprocal is 16
Chapter 7: INDICES fractional powers Examples Numbers to power 1/3 are cube roots. So the cube root of 8 is 2 Numbers to power 3/2 are square roots first. The square root of 4 is 2 Then 2 cubed is 8 Numbers to power 1/2 are square roots. So the square root of 25 is 5 Numbers to power 2/3 are cube roots first. The cube root of 8/27 is 2/3 Then 2/3 squared is 4/9 Numbers to power 1/4 are fourth roots. So the fourth root of 10000 is 100 Numbers to power -3/2 are square roots first. The square root of 25/36 is 5/6 Then 5/6 cubed is 125/216 Lastly it’s a negative power so the reciprocal of 125/216 is 216/125

Chapter 9: straight line graphs Draw the graph of y = 2 x + 1
Chapter 9: straight line graphs Plot the straight line using the gradient and y-intercept y = - ½ x + 2
Chapter 9: straight line graphs gradient and y-intercept Rewrite the equation 3 y – 2 x = 5 into the form y = mx + c Find the gradient and the y-intercept Find the gradient of the line which passes through the points A (1, 4) and B (-3, 2) Find the equation of the straight line which passes through the points (1, 3) and has gradient 2
