KOWNAYN University Data Analysis and Interpretations
Data Analysis • Introduction • Types of Data Analysis Methods – Quantitative data analysis methods: • Descriptive • Inferential – Qualitative data analysis methods • Conclusion
Introduction • Data analysis: – Refers to the computation of certain measures along with searching for patterns of relationships that exist among data group – Analysis in survey and experimental studies involves estimating the value of unknown parameters of the population and testing hypothesis for drawing inferences
Types of Data Analysis Method • Quantitative data analysis methods can be categorized: – Descriptive: • is the use of measure of central tendencies such as mean, median and mode • and measures of dispersion such as standard deviation to describe a group of subjects. • It is used when the researcher does not intend to generalize the findings
Types of Data Analysis Method, cont… • Types of Descriptive Analysis: – Mean: • the average of a set of quantitative data • The sum of all scores divided by the total number of items in the set • It is to describe the central measure if the sample is normally distributed – Mode: • The most frequent number (or variable) • Used mostly for qualitative data
Types of Data Analysis Method, cont… • Types of Descriptive Analysis: – Median: • The number (or variable) that divides a set of characteristics into two equal halves when all the numbers (or variables) are arranged in increasing magnitude • It is a positional average – Standard deviation: • The average variation of all scores in the distribution from the mean • Used to estimate the variability of the distribution
Types of Data Analysis Method, cont… • Inferential Analysis: – Is used to draw conclusions concerning the relationships and differences found in research results – Your should choose and identify the most suitable tools for analysing a particular data – Available inferential tools are among the following: t-tests, correlation and regression, ANOVA/MANOVA, and Chi-square
Types of Data Analysis Method, cont… • Types of Qualitative Data Analysis Method: – The researcher quantifies the responses and expresses them as frequencies using descriptive or inferential statistics – Narrative or content analysis • The researcher simply presents a detailed and literal description of his/her observations for the readers to make their opinion
Conclusion • Data Analysis Procedure and Practical Process: – Name the techniques to be used for data analysis and provide definitions from the literature – Describe the main features of the techniques to show understanding – Justify the choice of the techniques for the study. – Consider the nature of your data and data collection method
