Causes • Chinese Civil War - China falls to communist • Japan became the key to defending Asia • Dividing Korea at 38 th parallel – after World War II – North Korea invades South Korea, to unite the country under communism

Containment Policy: • Stop the spread of communism throughout Asia • Use Military to support the policy

UN Police: • UN Security Council sent troops to defend South Korea • American Fleet sent to protect Taiwan • Air and Naval support for S. Korea • Congress cheered Truman’s actions • (did not declare war)

Mac. Arthur: • Leader of UN forces in Korea • Pushes N. Koreans back out of S. Korea • Disagreement with Truman on expanding the war to China

EFFECTS: • Korea remains divided by 38 th parallel – DMZ zone – Are American troops still in Korea? • Americans frustrated with death toll and results – 33, 600 KOA and 20, 600 died in accidents or from disease • Communist out of S. Korea - Containment had occurred; expanded the Cold War to Asia – Began to send aid to the French in Vietnam • 1 st time fought with integrated military • MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX - Increase in Military spending and research and use of military pressure (instead of economic or political) • Poisoned relationship w/communist China
