Knowledge is Power English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; pupils, therefore, who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised. “If you’re going to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books. ” Roald Dahl Respect Challenge Confident Ambition for Excellence! Knowledge is Power The Power of Reading Why do we use it? At Bradley Green we want the children to be immersed in high quality texts that allow them to become authors. We strongly believe that children need to understand the full journey, from enjoying the text, to planning, understanding the purpose, audience and choosing the correct grammar when writing their piece. We believe children need to understand experience the planning, writing and editing process so that they can leave Bradley Green feeling confident in their abilities. It is for this reason that we use Power of Reading across school from EYFS- Year 6. What is it? The Power of Reading program focuses on ensuring the best possible practice in the teaching of literacy. It bases the foundation on textbased units of work that place literature at the heart of reading, which we strongly believe is vital to get children to becoming confident writers. It offers multiple teaching and learning opportunities, which are proven to raise engagement and attainment in both reading and writing by providing teaching staff with the tools to have a deeper knowledge of quality children’s literacy and ultimately have a positive impact on the teaching of literacy. Teaching sequences Power of reading provides detailed teaching sequences for their texts. Each sequence gives you an overview on what the text is about, how long the sequence may last, any issues it may deal with, what the learning outcomes are as well as National Curriculum objectives, reading, speaking and listening and cross-curricular links. It highlights the creative writing opportunities and provides detailed notes for each ‘session’, ranging from unpicking the text and drama opportunities to planning and writing. These spellings are visited frequently each half-term in English and spelling sessions as well as whole school spelling bees.
