Knowledge is Power Art & Design Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. At Bradley Green we are trying to create confident, independent artists who can articulate and value their own creative journey. “Creativity takes courage” Henri Matisse Respect Challenge Confident Ambition for Excellence! Knowledge is Power Art & Design progression EYFS We believe children in EYFS should be introduced to a wide a variety of materials and experiences, which are revisited over time. Confidence in handling materials, exploring techniques and realising ideas builds over time and through repeated experience. We have an open-ended, child-led approach to help build skills and enjoyment in children so that by the time they enter primary education they have a mindset which will help them become confident, creative learners ready for a more thorough exploration. Knowledge is Power Using Sketchbooks Ø The sketchbook belongs to the child and should be a place they can freely explore and create (within reason! Children need expectations and support for presentation just like in any other book) Ø Teachers need their own sketchbook to model presentation and layout and also to model the thought processes Ø Self portrait at the beginning of each school year (see pic) Ø Unit overview at the beginning of unit Ø Short date, children can be creative with the title if you need one- the learning will be obvious from your unit overview Ø Any comments you would like to make that aren’t verbal can go on a post itchildren should be doing their own evaluation (self or peer) Respect Challenge Confident Ambition for Excellence! Knowledge is Power Teaching Ø Each class has an artist that they learn about

Knowledge is Power Teaching Ø Each class has an artist that they learn about all year alongside other artists from their curriculum. They will be able to use this artist to compare and contrast. Over time children will build up a knowledge bank of artists they can use for inspiration in their own work. Ø Each classroom has a ‘creative corner’ where the key artist will be displayed and where other creative learning can be displayed too. Ø At the beginning of an art lesson children will either do a drawing warm up or knowledge recall of previous skills and knowledge. Ø The warm up could go in to sketch books but it doesn’t have to. Use the space wisely, you could do the warm up on the same page as the lesson task. Try not to waste space in your sketchbooks for just a warm up. Respect Challenge Confident Ambition for Excellence! Knowledge is Power Drawing Ø Drawing is a taught skill that children need to revisit over and over again to improve. Ø At the start of an art lesson you either need to do a drawing warm up or a recall of knowledge and skills. Ø Drawing warm ups are quick activities that when revisited over and over will teach children skills they can apply. This will give drawing confidence. Ø See the drawing warm ups power point for ideas. Ø See your year group knowledge and skills power point for knowledge to recap. Respect Challenge Confident Ambition for Excellence! Curiosity
