KNOWING OUR NUMBERS Ø Place value : Place value of a digit in a number depends upon the position of the or the place it occupies in the place value chart. Ø For example - place value of 5 in 4578 is 500 as 5 is in the hundreds place so place value of 5 in 4578 is 5 X 100 = 500. Ø Face value : Face value of any digit in a number is the digit itself , it independent of its position in the number. It is always the digit itself. Ø For example – Face value of 3 in 3456 is 3 and also face value of 3 in 5637 is 3.
