Kiwanis Club of Roanoke 5 Year Strategic Plan
Kiwanis Club of Roanoke 5 -Year Strategic Plan
Why Are We Here? • To grow and survive, all organizations need to periodically review where the are at, and where they want to go. Stagnant organizations that rely on “doing what’s always been done” will eventually wither and die. Unfortunately, that is happening too frequently with all types of organizations, including Kiwanis Clubs across the world.
Committee Members • Incoming officers – they have to take ownership • Older members – institutional knowledge • Young members – new ideas • New members – what attracted me? • Diverse members – men/women, white/non-white
The Process • Met four times (mostly Saturday mornings), 3 hours each. • Conducted research on membership, finances, activities, etc. • Surveyed the membership to get member feedback • Reviewed previous strategic plan (we did well!) • Adopted the template from Kiwanis International
Kiwanis “I-Plan” model • Inspiration – membership and engagement • Impact – meaningful service • Image – internal and external awareness of Kiwanis • Investment – financial viability
Step 1 – Create the Vision What is the Roanoke club about? • Brainstormed 27 different “club characteristics” • Narrowed to “Top 5” and created a revised Vison and Vivid Description. • Invest in our community • Support Service Leadership Programs • Cultivate and encourage a fun, friendly, diverse and inclusive community of members • Provide personal fulfillment and growth of members
Step 2 – Gather and Analyze Information • Identified our Strengths (14), Weaknesses (13), Opportunities (17) and Threats (9) – [SWOT Analysis] • Brainstormed strategic initiatives • Prioritized to develop our 5 -year strategic initiatives under the four I’s • Reviewed and approved by our Board • Committees will develop SMART goals, including timelines and measurements in the coming months • SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-based
Step 3 – The Strategic Initiatives • Inspiration (Membership and Engagement) • Increase and sustain active engagement of members and better utilize members’ expertise. • Continue to increase club diversity. • Increase membership by reducing time commitments and financial barriers that limit new members.
Step 3 – The Strategic Initiatives • Impact (Meaningful Service) • Determine our signature project(s) and provide more resources and cultivate increased awareness for that project(s). • Enhance collaboration with grant recipients; provide more sweat equity to grant-funded projects; solicit more feedback about impact of grant awards. • Place increased emphasis on community workforce development that is reflective of the community we serve.
Step 3 – The Strategic Initiatives • Image (Internal/External Awareness) • Create greater awareness of our Kiwanis club in our community by allocating more resources (money and/or members) toward image / brand / advertising, etc. • Create greater awareness of our SLP support and activities.
Step 3 – The Strategic Initiatives • Investment • Strengthen the administrative budget. • Develop new and innovative methods to raise funds / create revenue sources.
Where did we go from there? • Presented initiatives to membership - roundtable discussions • Restructured our committees to align with the I-plan initiatives • Directed committee chairs to develop goals and strategies to implement those goals • Require each I-plan coordinator to report quarterly to the Board • Develop a theme song “Stand By Your Plan”
