Tips Preventing Burns Treating Minor burns • Always use dry oven pot holders when cooking hot • Run under cool water foods and liquids or • Apply lotion, moisturizer or removing them oven or burn crème microwave • Cover loosely with clean • Turn panhandles toward the gauze center of the range • When cooking remove pan lids by tilting them away from face to prevent burns from steam • Clean grease and bits of food off oven • Wait until appliances cool down before cleaning them
Prevent Fires Tips • • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen where you can reach it quickly and safely Do not wear clothing with long, loose-fitting sleeves when cooking Keep long hair tie back Keep flammable objects away from the stove Do not leave the kitchen while food is cooking Never use water on a grease fire Keep aerosol cans away from heat
Preventing Fires/Burns • Extinguish fires with: – Fire Extinguisher by following the PASS steps • Pull Pin • Aim at Base of Fire • Spray fire while using a • Sweeping motion – Smother fires with Salt, baking Soda or wet towel – Never put water on a Grease Fire – Don’t Panic!!!
Preventing Falls • • Tips Clean up spilled foods or liquids immediately Keep floor clear of clutter Stand on a sturdy step stool to high or hardto-reach items Store heavy items within reach Choose kitchen rugs with a nonskid backing Never walk on wet floor Make sure shoes fit and all laces are tied Treating Falls • Leave person on floor if anything seems to be broken • Alert an adult
Tips Preventing Cuts Treatment for cuts • Keep Knives sharp • CUT FOOD AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. USE A CUTTING BOARD FOR ALL CUTTING JOBS • ALWAYS HOLD KNIVES BY THE HANDLE • WASH KNIVES AND SHARP OBJECTS SEPARATELY FROM OTHER UTENSILS • DON’T TRY TO CATCH A FALLING KNIFE • KEEP FINGERS AWAY FROM ROUGH SURFACES, SLICING EDGES AND ROTATING BEATERS • NEVER PICK UP BROKEN GLASS WITH BARE HANDS. SWEEP UP GLASS • Clean cuts by running under warm water – Apply pressure if bleeding is heavy • Apply antibacterial crème or spray • Bandage with clean gauze or band-aid
Preventing choking Tips • Chew with your mouth closed • Don’t talk and laugh with your mouth full • Don’t play with your mount food • Chew your food thoroughly before swallowing Treatment • Apply Heimlich maneuver • Alert adult
Preventing Shock Tips • Avoid using any appliances with a worn cord • No aluminum foil or any metal Treatment utensil in the microwave • Unplug appliance • Don’t plug in several • Do not touch appliances at once appliance or person • Always unplug appliances after use and keep appliance • Notify adult unplugged when not In use • Disconnect appliance by pulling out the plug directly • Make sure hands are dry when dealing with electric appliances • Keep all electrical appliances and cords away from water
Other ways to be safe in the kitchen! • Keep chemicals away from foods and food preparation areas • Store foods properly • Cook foods thoroughly • Always wash your hands • Store heavy items on bottom shelves
