Kipi
Kipi Located in the heart of Central Zagori, Kipi village has been throughout time one of most significant villages of the area. Today, Zagori, the “area behind the mountain” as its name means, is one of the most picturesque and traditional locations in Greece. Hidden in the beeches and the rocks with the characteristic formations, Kipi village is surrounded by rivers, while water springs from everywhere.
The six amazing stone bridges that connect the paths around the village have served for a long time the communication of Kipi with the surrounding areas as the road network is quite recent. As they are scattered around the village, it takes just a 2 -3 hour trek to visit them all. These bridges, built some centuries ago, are preserved in an excellent condition. They are strategically located in the area ensuring their continuous usage, as the rivers of Zagori are quite often impassable during the winter. The famous stone bridges of Zagori, made by the special craftsmen of their time, are monuments of the capabilities and imagination of those people.
Their construction being a very difficult and problematic task, these bridges are unique and different compared one to another. The number of their arcs, their shape and their development in the space define the specific character of each bridge. The location for the construction of a bridge was always chosen very carefully and as far away as possible from areas with sand, as this made the foundations risky. The narrow and rocky parts of the rivers were the preferable locations for the construction of the bridges, but more dangerous for the construction process. The construction material was schist stone and the connection material a mixture from lime, roof tile and other material. The positioning of the stones of the arch and the central “key stone” demanded special capability and knowledge of the material, as the whole structure was depending on the safe transition of the loads to the side foundations of the arches.
PLAKIDAS OR KALOGERIKO (MONK) BRIDGE About 200 meters from the exit of Kipi Village, towards Koukkoli lies the three arc Plakidas or Kalogeriko (Monk) bridge. This is, maybe, the most photographed stone bridge of Zagori. It connects the two sides of Vikakis gorge in a wide area. Built in 1814, it presents an exceptional monument of the bridge construction art.
Lazaridis or Kondodimos Bridge At the exit of Kipi Village towards Koukkouli. This bridge connects the two sides of Vikakis gorge in a location where the sides of the gorge are very steep and close to the other. It has one arc, was built in 1753 and is very spectacular among the forested landscape that surrounds it. It is part of the path that connected Kipi to Koukkouli and Kapesovo villages. The path continues in the forest and gets divided a little further up.
The one arc stone bridge of Kokkoros or Noutsos was built in 1750. This bridge lies a couple of Km from Kipi Village towards the road to Ioannina. The bridge presents a clever decision by the craftsman who takes advantage of the most narrow part of the river by detouring a little of the straight line and building a stone path on the sides of the gorge parallel to the river.
